DPS Roundabout Design Memo Released
As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, sustainability, and operational consistency, the Department of Public Service is pleased to announce the release of
Design Memo 7.04: Modern Roundabout Design
This Design Memo guidance formalizes the City’s position that roundabouts, where feasible, are the preferred intersection control solution, due to their proven benefits in reducing serious crashes, calming traffic, and improving circulation.
Highlights include:
-
Design criteria for mini, single-lane, and multi-lane roundabouts
-
Standards for truck accommodations and bicycle/pedestrian safety
-
Geometry and performance check methodologies for efficient planning and approval
This design guidance is intended to complement all other published design guidance for roundabouts. This design guidance is not intended to cover every facet of roundabout design. Designers should continue to consult the existing publications on roundabout design in addition to this design guidance.
We encourage all consultants, contractors, designers, and City Departments to review and apply the guidance to applicable intersection and roadway projects. Contact your City of Columbus Project Manager with any questions as to how this Design Memo applies to your project.
Thanks!
