Tuttle Skate Park Opens with Board Giveaway, Demos and Workshops

Columbus, OH–Columbus Recreation and Parks will officially open the new Tuttle Skate Park this weekend.

Columbus residents have advocated for additional skateparks within the city for several years. Before Tuttle Skate Park, the City only had two skateparks–Dodge and Fairwood skate parks. To respond to residents' request, Columbus Recreation and Parks developed the new skate park, which was completed this spring. The new skate park features approximately 12,000 square feet of flowy street and transition skate elements.

The community is invited to a grand opening event that will feature demonstrations by professional skaters as  well as a skate board and helmet giveaway and instructional workshops by Board for Bros and local skate partners.

"Getting outside and being active is important to your physical and mental well-being, and offering new and different ways for children and young adults to be active is core to our mission," said Bernita A Reese, CPRP, director of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. "We're excited to open the new skate park and hopefully spark the interest of more people to get involved in the sport."

Skateboarding is an accessible sport as it takes minimal equipment, said Michael Blanford, executive director of Boards For Bros. Needed equipment includes skate boards, helmets and pads, and people can skate in any safe location.

"We hope that, by offering the demonstrations, workshops, and free boards and helmets, we can introduce more youth to this sport," said Blanford. "It's a great way to make it easy for children to sample the sport."

The Tuttle Skate Park is an extension of improvements to Tuttle Park that are in process. The improvements include repairs to the existing futsal and tennis courts, the relocation of a new full-size basketball court, improved park lighting, the addition of several dozen new trees, and the addition of a new amenity area with an open shelter, benches, picnic tables, bike racks and a water bottle re-fill station. Additionally, a new ADA-accessible route to the lower fields from Oakland Avenue/Tuttle Community Center was added.
