(CINCINNATI)—Ohio
Attorney General Mike DeWine today announced a lawsuit against Form Giant LLC,
the Cincinnati-based business that operates Change-My-Address.com. Consumers across the country mistakenly believed the website was associated
with the United States Postal Service (USPS).
“This
business has agreed to make changes to its website, but complaints continue to
come in,” Attorney General DeWine said. “By law, businesses can’t misrepresent
their services and they must clearly disclose important terms and conditions.”
According
to the lawsuit, the business is based at 7770 Cooper Road, Ste. 20 in
Cincinnati. It offers to change a consumer’s address with the USPS for $9.95 to
$29.95. The USPS charges $1 for this same service.
Consumers
across the U.S. believed that the business was associated with
the USPS. However, Change-My-Address.com is a for-profit company that charges for its services.
At least
600 consumers nationwide have filed complaints about the business with the
Better Business Bureau.
The
lawsuit charges the business and its CEO with violations of Ohio’s Consumer
Sales Practices Act, including misrepresentation and failure to clearly
disclose exclusions and limitations. In the lawsuit, Attorney General DeWine
seeks consumer restitution, injunctive relief, civil penalties, and other costs. Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson also filed a lawsuit against the business.
Attorney
General DeWine encourages consumers to read the terms and conditions carefully
before giving out payment information in any consumer transaction.
Consumers
who suspect an unfair business practice should contact the Ohio Attorney
General’s Office at 800-282-0515 or www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov.
