A Message from Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger
Tonight, I will deliver my 2024 State of the County Address in Saugerties, reflecting on our work in 2023 and previewing initiatives for the coming year. We’ll share a recording of the event, so stay tuned for updates on what’s ahead for Ulster County!
Earlier this week, I issued a Proclamation declaring February 2024 as Black History Month in Ulster County, and we’ve had the opportunity to participate in many inspiring events and educational activities organized by community members throughout the county. For updates on this and more, please continue reading this edition of the Ulster County Executive Newsletter.
All my best,

February is Black History Month!

The City of Kingston, in partnership with the County, hosted a special event at the Everett Hodge Center in honor of Black History Month. Ulster County Chief Diversity Officer Esi Lewis presented the County Executive's Black History Month Proclamation, and the County Clerk's office displayed a historical profile series about Everette Hodge, a Kingston community leader and activist for whom the Center is named.
Everette Hodge was a civil rights leader and community activist living in Kingston in the 1950s where he organized a new chapter of the NAACP for Ulster County and served as its President for 29 years. Mr. Hodge led the fight to change discriminatory zoning laws in order to open a funeral home that served the community for decades. He was an ardent supporter of education and student achievement and worked to integrate schools, government offices, and jury services. We invite our residents to visit the Everette Hodge Community Center and explore the incredible legacy of community empowerment, civic engagement, and pride that Everette Hodge created for us in our own backyard.
Black history is American history. Today and every day, we remain committed to educating ourselves, amplifying unheard voices, and embracing the diverse stories that make up our past.
