Fall is a wonderful time of year, but it does have its share of hazards. Think safety as you enjoy the cooler temperatures and vibrant colors. Make sure you have an extra jacket, scarf, or hat in case of an unexpected temperature drop. If you don't have an emergency car kit in your vehicle, now is a good time to make sure you have one before winter starts. Check out the National Weather Service Fall Safety page here. Our Emergency Services Dispatchers moved to an alternate location near Cornell University in early September to make way for much-needed renovations to the primary 9-1-1 Center on Brown Road in Lansing. “We estimate the renovations to our Brown Road facility will be completed by early next year,” said DoER Director Michael Stitley. “Our 9-1-1 team relocated to the Pine Tree location on September 9th and will operate from there until the renovations are completed.” Learn more in this article published by the Ithaca Journal.
"I called 9-1-1 for help with my wife, who had fallen in the bathroom. Your dispatcher calmly and quickly assessed our urgent but not critical situation. He sent the EMS vehicle, which arrived within 10 minutes. He was very professional and helped me "lift-assist" my wife into a chair, took her vitals, and left us feeling in control. The rest of the day was uneventful and we thank you very much for the rapid and careful help. I inquired about paying for this service and was told it is a County service without charge currently supported by a grant. We are very grateful!"
EMS Program Manager Joe Milliman and Emergency Services Dispatcher Travis Collins were recognized Sept. 24th by the Central New York Emergency Medical Services (CNYEMS) Regional Council. CNYEMS is made up of five counties—Cayuga, Cortland, Onondaga, Oswego, and Tompkins. Joe was honored for Excellence in EMS Quality and Safety for his role in creating the Tompkins County EMS team, while Travis was named Communication Specialist of the Year. Congratulations!

The theme for National Fire Prevention Week 2024 is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” This year's campaign strives to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home. Check with your local fire department for any Open Houses in October and how you can volunteer to help serve your community. A reminder that daylight saving timen endsfor the year on Sunday, November 3rd when we move our clocks back one hour. That's also a good time to check the batteries in your smoke alarms.

This year, the Ithaca Tompkins International Airport, the Department of Emergency Response, and Tompkins County Whole Health combined the traditional Airport Day with the Preparedness & Safety Fair to create one event on Saturday, September 14th. There were more than 200 runners for the Runway 5k, over 700 tickets sold for the East Hill Flying Club's pancake breakfast, nearly 70 scenic flights by EHFC, 50 people who attended the Citizen Preparedness Corps training, and 38 units of lifesaving blood collected at a Red Cross blood drive! Thank you to everyone who attended, and the more than two dozen agencies and organizations that participated!
