Tax Season is officially open. Using filing resources from the New York State Tax Department can make completing and submitting your return on time fast, secure, and even free, if you qualify.
If your 2021 income is $73,000 or less, you can file both your federal and New York State returns at no cost through the Tax Department website. Visit Free File, to see if you qualify to electronically file for free.

Create an Individual Online Services account. You'll be able to confirm that we received your return and find the unique document locator number (DLN) that identifies your return.

Sign up for electronic communications to receive letters or notices about your return—including your refund issue date—electronically.
