Election of Teacher Trustees

Election of Teacher Trustees

As a NYSTRS delegate, you serve two main functions: act as a liaison between the Retirement System and fellow members in your district and elect a teacher member to NYSTRS' Board.

The 10-member Board includes three teacher members who each serve a three-year term. Typically, one teacher trustee is elected each year at the Annual Delegates Meeting. However, this year two trustees are up for election at the Oct. 29 virtual meeting.

  • Election 1: Eric J. Iberger, a teacher in the Bayport-Blue Point Union Free School District, is the incumbent running for election for the 2022-2025 term.
  • Election 2: Juliet Benaquisto, a teacher in the Schenectady City School District, is the incumbent running for election to complete the remainder of the 2020-2023 term.

Nominations for other candidates will be accepted through close of business on Friday, Oct. 15. Nominations must be made using the form available on the Delegates > Annual Delegates Meeting page of NYSTRS.org. Only forms completed in full and submitted electronically will be accepted. Nominations will not be accepted after Friday, Oct. 15 and cannot be made on the day of the election.

It is NOT necessary to submit a nomination form for Mr. Iberger or Ms. Benaquisto. Their names will automatically appear on the ballot. The form should only be used if you wish to nominate another candidate.

For another candidate to appear on the ballot, 100 or more NYSTRS delegates properly registered by their employers will need to nominate the candidate in the manner referenced above. The nominee will need to accept the nomination by completing an Acceptance of Nomination form provided by NYSTRS.

Board members serve without compensation and are responsible as fiduciaries to protect the long-term value of the System’s investment portfolio in order to provide benefit security for members. They are required to attend quarterly Board meetings, as well as committee and other meetings as may be necessary to fulfill their duties. Travel is required.

Only delegates (not alternates) may nominate teacher trustee candidates. Alternates can perform the duties of a delegate only if the employer has properly notified NYSTRS of this fact.
