Thank you for serving as a NYSTRS delegate! In addition to serving as a liaison between the Retirement System and fellow NYSTRS members in your district, your primary responsibility is to elect a teacher member to the NYSTRS Board. The 10-member Board includes three teacher members, with one elected each year and each serving a three-year term.
The election of a teacher Board member occurs at an annual meeting held each fall. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Annual Delegates Meeting and election will take place virtually on Monday, Nov. 9.
Elizabeth A. Chetney, a teacher in the Baldwinsville Central School District since 1992, is the incumbent and is running for re-election in 2020. A long-time NYSTRS delegate, Ms. Chetney has served as president of the Baldwinsville Teachers' Association since 2009. She is also co-president of the Onondaga County Teachers’ Association.
Nominations for other candidates will be accepted through close of business on Monday, Oct. 26. Nominations must be made using the form available on the Delegates page of NYSTRS.org. Only forms completed in full and submitted electronically will be accepted. Nominations will not be accepted after Monday, Oct. 26 and cannot be made on the day of the election.
It is NOT necessary to submit a nomination form for Ms. Chetney. Her name will automatically appear on the ballot. The form should only be used if you wish to nominate another candidate.
For another candidate to appear on the ballot, 100 or more delegates properly registered by their employers will need to nominate the candidate in the manner referenced above. The nominee will need to accept the nomination by completing an Acceptance of Nomination form provided by NYSTRS.
Board members serve without compensation and are responsible as fiduciaries to protect the long-term value of the System’s investment portfolio in order to provide benefit security for members. They are required to attend quarterly Board meetings, as well as committee and other meetings as may be necessary to fulfill their duties. Travel is required.
Only delegates (not alternates) may nominate and vote for teacher trustee candidates. Alternates can perform the duties of a delegate only if the employer has properly notified NYSTRS of this fact.
If you have any questions, please email us at convdel@nystrs.org. Thank you for your cooperation as we navigate through this unique meeting arrangement.
