NYSDEC Announces Public Meeting and Comment Period Extension for Draft Remedial Action Work Plan for Brownfield Site on Water Street, Borough of Manhattan

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has received a

Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP) Draft Remedial Action Work Plan from 250 Seaport District LLC for a site known as 250 Water Street, site ID #C231127. This site is located in the Borough of Manhattan, within the County of New York, and is located at 250 Water Street.

NYSDEC invites you participate in a virtual public meeting to discuss the remedy proposed for the site.

You are encouraged to provide comments at the meeting, and/or during the comment period. The initial public comment period for the work plan was to end on August 11, 2021 and was extended to September 10, 2021. To accommodate the September 21, 2021 public meeting, the public comment period is being extended. Comments must now be submitted by September 30, 2021.

What is the Brownfield Cleanup Program?

New York’s Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP) is designed to encourage private-sector cleanups of brownfields and to promote their redevelopment as a means to revitalize economically blighted communities. The BCP is an alternative to “greenfield” (land not previously developed or contaminated) development and is intended to remove some of the barriers to, and provide tax incentives for, the redevelopment of brownfields. Since its inception (2003), the BCP has catalyzed the cleanup of more than 300 contaminated sites statewide and incentivized redevelopment. There are more than 350 active sites in the BCP.
