Celebrate Earth Day all Month  

Earth Day is a great time to appreciate our natural resources and seek out ways to protect our communities and our planet. However, you don't need to wait until April 22nd to get engaged in planet-friendly events. 

Volunteer with Gowanus Canal Conservancy

Salt Lot Community Compost Site Tour - Monday 4/19/2021 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Learn more about the Salt Lot's community composting efforts on a guided tour with Site Coordinator Xander Shaw. Topics covered will include: organic waste management, urban ecology, DIY composting methods, and how to get involved with Big Reuse's composting program. 

Compost Work Day - Tuesday 4/20/2021 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Contribute to Gowanus community composting efforts by attending our weekly compost build! Volunteers will process organic waste, create compost piles, sift and bag compost. 

Clean & Green: Nursery - Wednesday 4/21/2021 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Volunteers will pot up plants and sift compost.

Public Volunteer Stewardship - Thursday 4/22/2021 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Volunteers will maintain bioswales and urban gardens throughout Gowanus. Activities include planting, weeding, pruning, watering, and litter collection.

Public Volunteer Stewardship: Spring Weekends - Saturday 4/24/2021 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Join a Virtual Earth Day Run

Join WeAct in their Virtual 5K Run during the week of Earth Day (April 17 - April 25). All registered participants will be able to run or walk the Earth Day 5K at a time and place of their choosing. As opposed to a traditional group racing event, a virtual race will provide the flexibility to practice social distancing while still allowing the opportunity to celebrate Earth Day and support WE ACT.

Tree Planting in Queens

Eastern Queens Alliance is hosting a tree planting in Idlewild Park Preserve with Parks on April 22- 25th from 9:00 a.m. - noon each day.

Earth Day Walk In Brooklyn

Green-Wood is hosting an Earth Day Walk 1:00 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. Celebrate Earth Day at Green-Wood with an afternoon walking tour led by Sara Evans, Green-Wood’s manager of horticulture operations, and learn about the lifecycles of some of the tree species that are tracked in the Cemetery’s Phenology Project.

Participants must reserve tickets in advance. Tickets for this event are pay-as-you-wish, though $10 - $15 is recommended to continue the support of free and low-cost programs throughout the year. Tickets are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled.

Great Saw Mill River Clean-Up 

Groundwork Hudson Valley is resuming its annual Earth Day Clean up of the Saw Mill River on April 24th from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Visit Groundwork Hudson Valley's website for details and to register for the event.
