Remembering Hudson Valley Repair Café Founder, John Wackman

In January of this year, our communities lost a vibrant and incredible soul - John Wackman - known by many for his role as the founder of Hudson Valley Repair Café.

John founded one of the first repair cafes in the United States in New Paltz, NY and went on to support and coordinate the creation of numerous repair cafes in NY’s Hudson Valley, Catskills, and Capital District. John was deeply passionate about the repair movement, traveling to Amsterdam where the Repair café movement was born, to learn more about the movement and bring his knowledge back to the United States where he would continue to grow the international movement right here in New York State. Shortly before his death, John and co-author Elizabeth Knight published their book, Repair Revolution: How Fixers Are Transforming Our Throwaway Culture, and spoke at many virtual events and interviews. The book explores the art of repair, repair cafés, right to repair, sustainability, and fixing beloved but broken items as a metaphor for our lives. John’s legacy will live on through the many communities and people’s lives he touched.

Virtual Public Hearings - Food Donation & Food Scraps Recycling Law

Part 350 regulations will implement the requirements outlined in the NYS Food Donation & Food Scraps Recycling law. The law takes effect on January 1, 2022 and requires large businesses, those that generate two tons of wasted food per week or more, to donate excess edible food and recycle all remaining food scraps if they are within 25 miles of an organics recycler.

Persons wishing to comment on the proposed Part 350 regulations have the opportunity to submit written comments or make a statement at one of two public comment hearing webinars.

DEC will accept written public comments through April 27, 2021: FoodScrapsLaw@dec.ny.gov.
