Opt Outside & Leave No Trace

Mask On a Tree

By planning to “carry in, carry out” or “pack it in pack it out” we can help keep the outdoors beautiful and safe. What exactly do these terms mean, and more importantly, what can you expect from a natural area that uses these phrases?

Simply put, anything you bring with you to the trail, natural area, or park, you need to bring back out with you. Many public lands do not have trash or recycling bins available.

Remember:

  • Plan ahead. Bring a trash bag or container to carry out your trash and recyclables in your backpack.
  • Carry out your trash (food wrappers, masks, gloves, etc), food (even if biodegradable, such as apple cores or banana peels), gear, or any personal belongings.
