Climate Smart Communities Webinar: Improving the Resilience of Multi-family Affordable Housing in New York State

Thursday, January 10, 2019, at 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

New York State experiences many different types of extreme weather events including periods of heavy rainfall, strong coastal storms, heat waves, and heavy snow. In a changing climate, it is expected that these events will become more intense and more frequent. As risks from extreme weather events increase, it’s imperative that communities work to protect businesses and residents alike. This webinar will focus on efforts to improve climate change resilience in the multi-family affordable housing sector.

During this webinar, speakers will discuss an approach to assessing the resilience of multi-family buildings and identify ways to reduce risks through actionable resilience strategies aimed at improving individual building systems. The presenters will provide an overview of resilience assessment tools such as B-READY and FloodHelpNY, resources available through NYSERDA on climate-related hazards, and case study findings from recent pilot projects.

Speakers:

  • Jim Leahy (Senior Consultant, Sustainable Buildings and Communities, DNV GL)
  • Nick Rajkovich (PhD, AIA, Assistant Professor, University at Buffalo)
  • Laurie Schoeman (Senior Program Director, Resilient Communities and Disaster Recovery, Enterprise Community Partners)

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the need for better protecting vulnerable populations in local communities.
  • Learn about the basic approach for assessing resilience in buildings.
  • Understand strategies multi-family building owners can adopt to minimize the impact from hazardous events.
