Agriculture & Climate Change Mitigation - A Role for Municipalities

A Climate Smart Communities (CSC) Webinar

Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Farmland emits approximately 66 times fewer greenhouse gases (GHGs) per acre than developed land in New York, according to the American Farmland Trust’s Greener Fields report. Clearly, keeping land in farming and concentrating development in existing urban centers are important ways to avoid the GHG emissions associated with development. This CSC webinar will describe the types of plans and policies that local governments can adopt to protect farmland and support low-emission, sustainable farming in their communities.

This webinar is the first of a two-part series that will explore the relationship between climate change, agriculture, and municipal policies in New York State. The second webinar, on December 7, will focus on adaptation.

Please provide us with your name and community affiliation, either via email or telephone to the DEC Office of Climate Change at climatechange@dec.ny.gov or 518-402-8448. In the event that we cancel or postpone this webinar, respondents will be notified.
