Happy Arbor Day!

arbor

New Rochelle marked Arbor Day 2026 by celebrating conservation and community stewardship through the planting of its own Liberty Tree. The event honored the enduring legacy of the original Liberty Tree as a symbol of unity, while also highlighting the importance of protecting and expanding the urban tree canopy for future generations.

Students joined the celebration, including two classes from Trinity School led by Mrs. Melody Castiglia and Ms. Jill Ritacco, as well as a 6th grade science class from Isaac E. Young Middle School led by Dr. Misner. With thoughtful questions and plenty of curiosity, they brought energy to the moment and helped make the day one to remember.

As New Rochelle's own, Thomas Paine, mused in his 1775 Poem Liberty Tree,

"...From the east to the west blow the trumpet to arms,
Through the land let the sound of it flee,
Let the far and the near, all unite with a cheer,
In defence of our Liberty Tree."

Earth Day Festival

earfffearth day

The City celebrated Earth Day with a fun-filled festival that brought together City staff, local vendors, and activities for all ages. The event was filled with community spirit and hands-on experiences, from eco-friendly tips and giveaways to interactive displays and family-friendly fun. It was a great day of connection, learning, and celebrating simple ways to make a positive impact on our planet.

Street Tree Inventory

The City has launched a comprehensive Street Tree Inventory, giving residents a behind-the-scenes look at the health, diversity, and impact of our urban forest. Through an interactive map and data dashboard, you can explore thousands of trees across the city and see how they contribute to cleaner air, cooler neighborhoods, and better stormwater management.

Completed in 2024, the inventory assessed over 15,000 trees citywide and is helping shape a long-term Community Forest Management Plan focused on maintenance, planting, and sustainability.

Curious about what’s growing on your block?

Want a Free Tree?

The City will plant a tree in the roadside easement adjacent to your home at no cost to you! You can also plant one yourself for free with prior approval from the DPW. The City handles the basic tree maintenance, while homeowners simply handle the general grounds care.

Celebrating 250 Years of Independence: New Rochelle Celebrates America!

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted, marking the birth of a nation founded on the principles of freedom, equality, and opportunity. As we approach this historic Semiquincentennial, we are invited to reflect on our past, celebrate our progress, and look ahead with hope and pride.

New Rochelle is proud to join communities across Westchester County, New York State, and the nation in celebrating America’s 250th birthday. Inspired by this historic milestone, we are embracing the opportunity to come together, honor our shared heritage, and highlight what makes New Rochelle unique

Through local events and initiatives, we look forward to bringing residents, families, and visitors together in a spirit of pride, reflection, and community.

Hydrant Flushing

Over the next several weeks, Veolia crews will be flushing fire hydrants and blow offs in New Rochelle. This work will be performed between the hours of 7:30 am and 4 pm. Workers will be carrying company identification cards for your security.

  • Hydrant flushing may temporarily cause slight discoloration of water and a decrease in water pressure.
  • A temporary slight discoloration of the water and a decrease in water pressure may be noted as a result of opening the hydrants.
  • If you experience this discoloration of water, please run your cold water in a basement sink for 15-20 minutes. This should clear your problem.
  • Please make sure during this flushing period that you check your cold water for discoloration. If the water is discolored, please flush your line as mentioned above before attempting to do any laundry.

Thank you for your patience while we perform this important seasonal maintenance on our water distribution system.
