Celebrating Black History Month at City Hall
In celebration of Black History Month, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion interviewed eight City representatives on the significance of this important observance.
New Public Works commissioner
Wilfredo Melendez, P.E. has been named as the new Commissioner of Public Works, effective February 6. Mr. Melendez brings extensive municipal experience to the position, most recently from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, as well as from the private sector.

North Avenue Bridge Replacement Project
A three-year project by the New York State Thruway Authority to replace the North Avenue bridge is underway. Starting in early March, bridge traffic will be narrowed to one lane in either direction. Reminder: Burling Lane is closed between North Avenue and May Street and there will be no left turn permitted onto Garden Street from North Avenue southbound. Please observe posted detours and travel carefully in the area.

Echo Avenue update
Night work closures will take place on Echo Ave. between Main and Huguenot Streets on Friday, February 24 in addition to March 1 and March 6 from 10PM to 6AM, to conclude sanitary sewer upgrades. Please observe posted detours and travel carefully in the area.

Summer Youth Employment appplications now open
New Rochelle youth and young adults ages 14-24 are encouraged to apply for summer positions through the New Rochelle Youth Bureau’s Summer Employment Program. Five different programs are offered, each operating 20 or 25 hours per week for six weeks during July and August and paying $15.00 per hour.
New this year: the "Access Equestrian" Employment Program provides special needs youth with job readiness skills training and actual work experience.
The deadline to apply is May 12.

Returning for the first time since COVID, registration is now open for the New Rochelle Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. Classes run nine consecutive Wednesday nights from 6:30-9:00 PM beginning March 8, 2023. Apply by February 28.

This community-focused program is an opportunity for customers to show their love and support for local restaurants while the beloved dining spots can show off their culinary specialties to their customers at the same time.
