SBA administrator Guzman announces new funding of $1.5 million to expand outreach centers for women entrepreneurs through minority care institutions

Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman, director of the U.S. Small Business Agency (SBA) and the voice of the 32.5 million U.S. small businesses in President Biden's cabinet, announced the availability of $1.5 million for 10 new grant opportunities for established minority care institutions that aspire to host a Women's Business Center (WBC, for its acronym in English) that offers results-oriented business services for women entrepreneurs.

Interesting facts about African-Americans in business

The number of Black/African American-owned employer firms and businesses are rising steadily. According to Census data, in:

  • 2014, there were approximately 108,473
  • 2014, there were 31,216 black-owned health care and social assistance firms; 15,078 professional, scientific, and technical support businesses; and 9,644 administrative, support, waste management and remediation services
  • 2016, there were approximately 121,466
  • 2017, there were approximately 124,004
  • 2020, there were approximately 134,567
  • 2020, there were 39,705 health care and social assistance firms, accounting for about 29.5% of all African American owned businesses

Resources for Black entrepreneurs

New businesses are on the rise across the United States, and particularly in the Black community. If you’re an entrepreneur with a good idea, it might be the right time to finally start your business 70% of African-American entrepreneurs say they are either “somewhat happy” or “very happy” with their businesses. 72% say their businesses are profitable.
