THREE NORTH LAS VEGAS RESIDENTS

TRANSPORTED TO UMC BURN UNIT

North Las Vegas, Nevada – The City of North Las Vegas Fire Department responded to

1604 Harewood Avenue for a single story, single family home fire reported at 5:50 a.m., Monday,

January 1. Firefighters reported heavy smoke showing upon arrival, coming from the back of the home at 5:56 a.m.  The first two firefighters on scene met a male patient in the doorway of the home. The patient reported having two other residents still in the house. The two firefighters entered the home and rescued a disabled elderly patient from the fire. The other patient was able to evacuate the home before the fire department arrived. There were a total of three residents at home when the fire initially occurred, two females (70’s and mid 50’s) and one male (mid 50’s). All of the residents were transported to UMC Trauma Burn Unit. The male and eldest female was reported to be in critical condition and the other female was in stable condition at the time of transport. The home sustained significant smoke damage along with fire damage, and is uninhabitable at this time.

This was a single alarm fire with 13 units and 34 firefighters and personnel responding from

North Las Vegas, City of Las Vegas, and Clark County Fire Departments.  Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the house of origin, and extinguish the fire within 5 minutes of arrival.  There were no other reports of injuries to firefighters or bystanders.

Three rooms in the home suffered significant damage with damage estimates at approximately $92,500. The fire remains under investigation.

There were reports that one of the residents of the home attempted to extinguish the fire for some time before he called 911, the fire department would never recommend doing this. A fire doubles in size every minute that it is allowed to burn. When there is a fire in your home, that becomes beyond a small trash or stove fire, and it can't easily be extinguished with a properly working fire extinguisher or smothering, please evacuate immediately and call 911.

For more information about the incident, please call North Las Vegas Fire Department Public Information Officer, Captain Cedric Williams, at (702) 292-9127.
