INCIDENT: Mother Arrested in August 9th Shooting that Left Her 10-year-old in Critical Condition
North Las Vegas, Nevada – Late Thursday afternoon, August 16, 2012, Detectives arrested Carmen Gustin (38) of North Las Vegas, on charges stemming from a shooting that occurred in her home on August 9, 2012. The incident left her 10-year-old son with an allegedly self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Gustin was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on the following charges:
CHILD ABUSE WITH SUBSTANTIAL BODILY HARM
CHILD NEGLECT x 2
DESTROYING EVIDENCE
Her bond was set at $160,000.00. She is scheduled to appear in Justice Court August 21, 2012 at 9:30 AM.
The victim remains in the hospital. His current condition is unknown.

Gustin has not been charged in connection with the August 9th shooting of her 10-year-old son. She was booked on outstanding misdemeanor warrants the night of the shooting.
Charges in this case are pending the conclusion of the investigation. There are no further updates.

Original Press Release dated 08/09/12 - On Thursday, August 9, 2012 at about 4:20 p.m., dispatch received information from medical personnel that they responded to a home in the 3500 block of Creosote Way, near Gowan Road and Allen Lane, regarding an injury to a child. When they arrived, they found a 10-year-old boy with a serious head injury, possibly a gunshot wound. The boy was transported to UMC Trauma in critical condition.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the boy was home alone with his 3-year-old brother. The boys located a handgun and evidence suggests the 10-year old boy shot himself. Their mother came home, found her son injured and called 9-1-1.
The mother, Carmen Gustin, was booked into the City of Las Vegas Detention Center on unrelated misdemeanor warrants. She has not been charged in connection with this shooting. A booking photo may be available tomorrow.
Child Protective Services took custody of the 3-year-old boy and a older teenage brother who was not home at the time the shooting occurred.
The investigation into the circumstances around the shooting continues. Charges are pending the conclusion of the investigation.
