Hello neighbors,
I'm excited to share that our Southern Nevada Urban Micro Academy (SNUMA) continues to grow!
Last week, SNUMA expanded its microschool classes to Neighborhood Recreation Center, opening classrooms for grades 3-4 and 5-6. This week, a third classroom opened at NRC, hosting children in grades 7-8.
Since the end of the Fall 2020 semester, SNUMA's enrollment has nearly doubled, as more North Las Vegas families have made the choice to find a safe, in-person alternative to distance learning.
SNUMA began as a way to ensure our children don't get left behind academically during the pandemic, but now I am proud to say it's really transitioned to become a notable educational model.
The program is open to North Las Vegas children in grades 1-8, as well as children of first responders. Upon starting at SNUMA, children are assessed in math and literacy, which allows for individualized lesson plans tailored to each student's needs. Enrollment is ongoing. Classes will be added based on demand. Currently, SNUMA operates at three City of North Las Vegas facilities: Silver Mesa Recreation Center, Neighborhood Recreation Center and Alexander Library.
Parents can enroll their children for free on NLVCares.com or by calling (702) 202-3490.

City of North Las Vegas celebrates Black History Month
The City of North Las Vegas is celebrating Black History Month all through February with a social media campaign filled with daily trivia, artwork and facts to honor African American leaders and every day citizens who have made a difference in our community and nation’s history, along with enriched lessons for students at the Southern Nevada Urban Micro Academy (SNUMA).
Local community artists will also have their artwork on what Black History means to them highlighted throughout the month and SNUMA students will participate in a number of activities highlighting historical Black leaders, including an essay contest on historic figures and their contributions to America and guest speakers visiting the classrooms.
Tune in to our City of North Las Vegas Facebook page throughout the month of February to learn more.

Registration for the 2021 Spring Youth Recreational Soccer League is now open!
The City of North Las Vegas co-ed youth recreational soccer league provides a fun environment for children ages 3-13 to learn and develop their soccer skills while engaging in low-key competition focusing on good sportsmanship.
Children are randomly assigned to volunteer coaches and practice one weeknight a week beginning the week of March 1 at Seastrand Park. Games are played on Saturdays, starting on March 21 (league play is contingent on the Governor's Directives regarding the COVID-19 pandemic).
Registration is $70 ($80 for the 9/10 and 11-13 divisions) and is ongoing through February 13. Register online or at any North Las Vegas Recreation Center.

New Same-Day Transportation Available for COVID-19 Vaccine & Testing
Are you helping prepare your friend or loved one to get the vaccine or testing? This can be an extremely challenging time for Nevadans who are already struggling. Navigating the methods for getting the vaccine when it is available can be even more challenging. Nevada Medicaid is asking Nevadans to plan ahead by knowing how to schedule a vaccine appointment and lining up transportation.
Nevada Medicaid is offering Medicaid recipients a flexible same-day transportation service with a variety of options including gas mileage reimbursement, bank card funding to take the bus, and, in most instances, same-day rides from ride services.
Information is available in English and Spanish at https://www.immunizenevada.org/county-specific-covid-19-vaccine-plan under Appointment Resources or by calling 1-844-879-7341.
Here are the steps to follow to plan ahead:
Step one: Check NVCovidFighter.org daily to find out when and where vaccines may be available in your county and schedule an appointment.
Step two: Plan transportation. The flyer available here describes who is eligible for transportation through Medicaid and how to schedule.
Step three: Get the vaccine and continue social distancing, frequent hand washing and mask-wearing.
Step four: Plan transportation for the second dose of the vaccine.
It is always Open Enrollment for Nevada Medicaid. Apply at https://accessnevada.dwss.nv.gov/. Non-citizens and the uninsured can receive COVID-19 services through federally qualified health centers: www.nvpca.org/health-centers.
 Yours in service,
Councilwoman Pamela Goynes-Brown
