Hello neighbors,

The holidays are just around the corner! I know the COVID-19 pandemic has been stressful and isolating for many people. While gatherings during the upcoming holidays can be an opportunity to reconnect with family and friends, holiday celebrations will likely need to be different this year to prevent the spread of COVID-19. I urge you all to please avoid activities that are higher risk for spread. Consider fun alternatives that pose lower risk of spreading COVID-19.

Check out these guidelines from the CDC to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

This holiday season, consider how your holiday plans can be modified to reduce the spread of COVID-19 to keep your friends, families, and communities healthy and safe.

SNUMA makes the grade

I am pleased to announce that our Southern Nevada Urban Micro Academy (SNUMA) children are high achievers! Yesterday, Mayor John Lee and City Councilwoman Pamela Goynes-Brown highlighted the stunning academic gains made by children enrolled in the City’s microschool program during a press conference.

Among the highlights:

  • 78% of children arrived at SNUMA below grade level in reading. 62% of children now are at or above grade level.
  • 93% of children arrived at SNUMA below grade level in math. 100% of children are currently working in material that is at least on grade level.
  • Nearly three-quarters of third grade children (71%) were reading below grade level. 42% are now at grade level and 28% are above grade level. Additionally, 85% have completed at least one year's worth of growth since their initial assessment.
  • Similarly, 71% of third grade children were testing below grade level in math. 57% are currently working at grade level and 43% are working above grade level.

These results are truly unprecedented. North Las Vegas students in particular have been historically underserved educationally, and these inequities have been highlighted as a result of the pandemic. Years of neglect and being pushed ahead can’t be fixed overnight, but we are making tremendous strides at SNUMA!

The Southern Nevada Urban Micro Academy follows SNHD and CDC best practices, and abides by all directives from the state, including mandated face coverings, socially-distant seating, and frequent cleaning and sanitizing of classrooms and facilities. There have been no cases of COVID-19 at SNUMA.

Parents can enroll their children now on NLVCares.com or by calling (702) 202-3490.

City of North Las Vegas concludes its "2020 Fall Homegrown Virtual Concert Series"

The City of North Las Vegas is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of its 11-week, online "2020 Fall Homegrown Virtual Concert Series," featuring live performances from the valley's best artists and local bands, streaming live from North Las Vegas' premiere entertainment venue, The Amp at Craig Ranch Regional Park.

Tonight, The Souvenairs will close the series for viewers to enjoy safely from home. People can watch the concert online at https://www.facebook.com/CityofNorthLasVegas.

The Souvenairs were formed in 2019 by Pablo Schwartz, Rob Ruckus, Brahim Rouas and Mike Powers. They proudly serve as the tour guides for a journey through some of 20th century America's greatest songs. Their premiere performance was March 14, 2020, the evening before COVID lockdown. Since then, the band has been steadily building a worldwide fan base through livestreams and short films available online. You can access them on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and mpsightandsound.com.

Only the performers and limited production staff will be on site in the 8,000 seat amphitheater in order to comply with social distancing protocols, crowd limits and other state directives. The event is closed to the public and is meant to be enjoyed online.

The show will stream live from 6 to 7:30 p.m. tonight on the official City of North Las Vegas Facebook page. The series is proudly presented by North Vista Hospital in partnership with the City of North Las Vegas.
