Hello neighbors,

As most of you may know, the State’s moratorium on evictions, put in place through Governor Sisolak’s executive order, ends tomorrow, Oct. 14.

However, the federal Centers for Disease Control has issued an eviction ban through the end of the year, Dec. 31.

In order to qualify, a tenant can download a copy of the declaration here:
https://www.lacsn.org/images/Flyers/CDCDeclarationPacket.pdf.

The tenant should keep a copy of the completed declaration and some proof that it was given to the landlord. If the tenant receives an eviction notice, they still must file with the court and attach the declaration.

A tenant is protected by the federal ban ONLY IF the tenant:

  • Gives their landlord the signed declaration and truthfully states that they are unable to pay their rent;
  • Has tried to obtain rental assistance;
  • Has made their best efforts to pay partial rent;
  • Has either received a stimulus payment OR will make less than $99,000 this year;
  • Eviction might leave the tenant homeless or forced into a group living situation.

The ban prevents most types of evictions but won’t protect tenants who engage in criminal activity, threaten other residents, damage the property, or violate their lease in some way unrelated to rent or payment.

Additional information is available at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/downloads/eviction-moratoria-order-faqs.pdf.

Friendly reminder, last week we also launched our NLVCares Housing Assistance Program in collaboration with Clark County to provide a safety net for North Las Vegas residents who have experienced COVID-related financial hardship.

The CARES Housing Assistance Program (CHAP) serves residents of Clark County who have suffered substantial financial hardship and now lack sufficient income or resources available to pay their housing costs because of the COVID-19 emergency or the response to that emergency.

Residents of North Las Vegas who can demonstrate financial impact due to COVID-19 may now apply for CHAP assistance directly through the City’s application portal below. Please note that anyone currently receiving a subsidy from another rental assistance program or living in public housing is ineligible for CHAP assistance. All assistance will be paid directly to your landlord/mortgage company/utility. NLVCares CHAP will:

  • Be available to NLV residents with less than $3,000 in liquid assets who can demonstrate a financial impact due to COVID (reduction of pay/hours, furlough, unemployment, reduction in business income).
  • Require landlords to participate and approve payments, including certifying they will not evict tenants for whom assistance is received.
  • Provide funding to cover past due rent/mortgage and associated late fees for the period of March 1, 2020 – November 30, 2020.

This this program is only open to those with residences located within the City of North Las Vegas. For full details about the program and to complete a short electronic application, please visit nlvcares.com and click on the NLVCares Housing Assistance Program.

2020 Census: Time is Running Out!

The census is one of the most important ways you can fight for your community and have a voice in your future. It helps determine how the federal government spends more than $1.5 billion every year, including money for roads, schools, and hospitals.

Everyone living in the United States has the right to be counted in the 2020 Census. Every immigrant, every child, every neighbor, every student, everyone. Even if you can’t vote, filling out the 2020 Census is a way to make your voice heard.

With our democracy on the line, the 2020 Census is a critical chance to ensure communities that historically have been undercounted from the census process are seen. Everyone, including you, deserves to be heard and to receive the rights and resources we all need.

Please fill out the Census at 2020census.gov.

NLVPD’s National Night Out Reimagined

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our North Las Vegas Police Department was unable to hold its traditional in person National Night Out event this year. Rather than cancel, staff got creative and reimagined the event in a new way.

The resulting National Night Out video highlights all of the different divisions in our police department and virtually introduces the community to many of the wonderful people who serve you -- our residents and businesses.

Watch the awesome video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYJ7XdmLZig (Please note that some of the footage was taken prior to the pandemic.)

Welcome, 7-Eleven!

I had a wonderful time welcoming our newest 7-Eleven convince store at 2810 N. Rancho Drive. This is a beautiful new store with amazing offerings! For those of you wondering, the whole ribbon-cutting followed all COVID-19 precautions. We just stood next to each other for this quick photo.
