New year, big goals

I want to start off by wishing each and every one of you a very happy new year!

I am excited to begin the year welcoming our newest North Las Vegas police officers. Last month, 13 academy recruits graduated to the rank of police officer. Soon, they’ll be out patrolling the streets and helping to keep our neighborhoods safe!

I also want to praise our new Police Chief Pamela Ojeda for her commitment to growing our Volunteers in Police Services (ViPS) Citizen’s Patrol Program, in which civilian volunteers are trained to support community safety and the North Las Vegas Police Department. Citizen’s Patrol members act as the eyes and ears of the Police Department by identifying suspicious activity, crimes in progress or dangerous situations. They are trained to recognize and report without getting directly involved.

Later this month, we’ll host our next ViPs Academy and add even more watchful eyes to our streets. To learn more about this program or to get involved, visit

Beyond our commitment to increasing public safety, we’re also excited for 2019 because our wonderful employees have been hard at work bringing even more jobs to the City. We receive inquiries almost daily from new companies and industries looking to relocate or expand to North Las Vegas, and we are seeing huge gains for the companies already located here.

Our City has a very bright future and is well on its way to becoming the breadbasket of Southern Nevada. Stay tuned for more exciting news!

Happy New Years

Grand marshal of the MLK Day Parade

I am incredibly honored to have been chosen as a grand marshal for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade slated for Jan. 21.

The annual parade features beautiful floats, decorated vehicles and performing groups who walk along Las Vegas Boulevard to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his lifelong efforts as a civil rights activist. It’s one of my favorite events of the year.

I hope to see you there!

Help us shape the future of the Deer Springs District

The City of North Las Vegas is excited to invite you to our second public workshop to envision the future of the Deer Springs District!

After several months of engagement, research and vision development for the district, six concepts have been identified to create a livable center that combines commercial and retail space, high-quality housing, transportation, trails, parks and public art.

At the second workshop – which is from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Skyview YMCA, 3050 E. Centennial Parkway, North Las Vegas – participants will:

• Review the six concepts.
• Confirm that the concepts are reflective of public input.
• Participate in further development of the design concepts.
• Help the project team identify gaps in the concept plan.

The workshop is open to everyone, and family activities will be available to keep kids occupied while parents participate.

If you cannot attend the meeting in person, please join us via Facebook Live at 5:45 p.m. Jan. 17 to see the presentation and send your comments and questions.

Welcome back to City Hall, Congressman Horsford!

I want to wish Congressman Steven Horsford a warm welcome back to City Hall! We are thrilled that our building continues to be a home for our CD4 representative. This is a great partnership that strengthens the work we do with our federal leaders and makes it easier for the public to access government services easily and conveniently.

The Nevada Secretary of State also has offices at North Las Vegas City Hall. We truly are a one-stop shop!

North Las Vegas streamlines solar projects

We in the City of North Las Vegas once again are breaking the mold and making government work better for our residents and businesses – this time by streamlining the permitting process for residential solar projects. We cut through more red tape to make it faster and easier for residents to have solar panels installed on their homes.

Shop with a Cop was a huge success

We had a great time with our fabulous North Las Vegas Police Department at the annual Shop with a Cop event.

Forty children got a chance to shop at Target alongside a North Las Vegas police officer or marshal who volunteered to be their personal shoppers. This year's young participants included children from Candlelighters of Southern Nevada, Positively Kids and the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.

A very special thank you to the businesses and residents of North Las Vegas who provided funding for this holiday shopping spree. As a result of these generous donations, each child was provided with roughly $200 to spend.

Child Haven Christmas

My favorite part of the holidays is being able to partake in events that bring children happiness. I had the opportunity to attend a private charity event for Child Haven last month at Target. Similar to our annual Shop with a Cop event, Target opened an hour early, and each child was provided a $100 gift card. Thank you for inviting me to be part of this fantastic event!
