Officer Involved Shooting
North Las Vegas, Nevada – Today, Assistant Chief Pamela Ojeda discussed details in the officer involved shooting which took place last week in North Las Vegas.
On Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at about 10:41 a.m., officers conducted a person stop on Statz Street at East Lake Mead Boulevard with a Hispanic male riding a bicycle. The officers conducted a pat down for weapons and a records check before releasing the subject with a warning. This stop was unrelated to the stop leading to the shooting.
Moments later, without clearing the stop over the radio, the officers decided to drive past 2841 Emmons Avenue. Officers had information that a Hispanic male adult living at 2841 Emmons Avenue was wanted for a felony domestic strangulation charge. They had additional information of a stolen vehicle series involving stolen Ford F-250 trucks and that 2841 Emmons Avenue was a target residence of that investigation.
As they pulled up to the residence they saw two subjects in the front yard of 2841 Emmons Avenue. Both subjects had the same general description as the felony domestic suspect they were looking for. Officers parked their patrol vehicle on Emmons Avenue near 2841 and approached the subjects. When the officers got close, both suspects fled on foot. One person fled southbound out of the officer’s sight as the other subject, identified as 26-year-old Gonzalo Rico-Jimenez, ran toward a blue Chevrolet truck parked in the driveway. The truck was backed in facing Emmons Avenue.
Rico-Jimenez entered the truck, shifted the transmission into drive, and started pulling forward from the driveway into the street. Both officers were already in front of the truck yelling commands for him to stop. Rico-Jimenez pulled further into the street, Striking both with the front end of the truck pushing the officers backward.
Both officers pointed their duty weapon at Rico-Jimenez and gave him commands to stop. Rico-Jimenez continued to ignore the commands driving the truck toward the officers. Given the above circumstances, both officers discharged their firearms into the vehicle toward Rico-Jimenez.
Immediate medical assistance was requested through dispatch. Officers on scene pulled Rico-Jimenez from the vehicle and started CPR. Medical personnel responded and found Rico-Jimenez unresponsive and pronounced him deceased on scene.
One officer sustained a minor leg injury as a result of the incident but was not transported to the hospital.
This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is urged to call the North Las Vegas Police Department at 702-633-9111 or, to remain anonymous, call 702-385-5555.
