Councilman Richard J. Cherchio's Ward 4 newsletter

Richard J Cherico

Hello! I hope you had a wonderful summer. Are you enjoying this fall weather as much as I am? I'm not sure there's anyone who loves fall as much as I do.

I hope you enjoy the latest edition of my e-newsletter. I'd also ask that you share it with your family and friends. It is vitally important to me, as your Councilman, that all of our residents stay informed and are able to communicate concerns or suggestions to me and our city staff so we can do our best to serve you. With all of the growth we are experiencing in both residential and commercial development in North Las Vegas, challenges can occasionally arise along with opportunity, which makes communication between us that much more important.

Armed Forces, Military Veterans & First Responders Appreciation Day was a big hit

I wanted to share just a few photos from our fantastic Armed Forces, Military Veterans & First Responders Appreciation Day event held Sept. 8  at Craig Ranch Regional Park. It was a huge success and such a joy for me to see so many in our city honor and support our military and first responder heroes. We truly are a city of family and friends!

So many people helped make the event possible. A special thank you to our North Las Vegas Fire and Police Honor Guards for their participation and to our Craig Ranch Regional Park staff, who were vital to the event's success. Also, many thanks to all of our vendors who attended and provided information and services to our guests, and kudos to Victoria Tambunting for lending her photography skills. Lastly, a huge thank you to our many amazing sponsors, whose contributions made it possible for us, once again, to provide entertainment, children's games and free food for all our of veterans, military members and first responders, as well as their families!

I'm also pleased to announce that KSNV News 3 decided to choose our nonprofit Armed Forces and Military Veterans Appreciation Inc. as Charity of the Month this October. That means our organization will receive $100 every time Kevin Janison forecasts the weather accurately (at least within 3 degrees)! So far, we are up to $500! Let's hope he's right often this month!

Finally, I want to give a shout-out to our fantastic volunteers who work hard all year to make our event a success. They are tireless, attending organizational meetings, spreading the word as ambassadors and visiting businesses and communities, particularly as the festival draws nearer. Thank you, ROTC, Boy Scouts, Sun City Veteran and Auxiliary Club, and last but not least, our North Las Vegas VIPs (Volunteers in Police Service). You all helped make this event a success!

We need your input: Deer Springs District

What do you want to see on Deer Springs Way? Please tell us!

The City is currently conducting a Livable Centers Study for the Deer Springs District, a 2.5-mile stretch of Deer Springs Way from Commerce Street to Pecos Road. Livable centers are vibrant, walkable communities that include transportation options, multiple housing choices, shops, restaurants and easy access to jobs and services.

Help us shape the future of the Deer Springs District. Please learn about the project at cityofnorthlasvegas.com/DeerSprings and submit your comments through Friday, Oct. 19. We’ll use your feedback to create conceptual plans to share during the next phase of the planning process.

Welcome to Craig Road, Terrible Herbst!

Following on the heels of the highly-successful debuts of In-N-Out Burger and Cracker Barrel, Terrible Herbst is the latest company to develop in the Craig Corridor.

The company is building a new gas station and convenience store on land owned by the Morgan and Hachquet families, immediately adjacent to In-N-Out Burger and Cracker Barrel.

Terrible Herbst Oil Company was originally founded by Ed Herbst in Chicago in 1937. While the business was distinctively family-owned – they regularly offered pony rides and bubble gum to kids and customers – the company was christened “Terrible” by competitors because of the competition that would arise whenever Herbst moved into a new area.

In 1959, Herbst opened the very first Terrible's in Las Vegas. Today, Terrible Herbst operates more than 130 convenience stores and more than 40 car washes throughout Nevada, California, Arizona and Utah.

Business of the Month: Broadacres Marketplace

Broadacres Marketplace & Event Center was recently chosen as Business of the Month by Councilman Isaac Barron and the North Las Vegas City Council. Broadacres sits on 44 acres off Las Vegas Boulevard and features more than 1,100 vendor spaces offering food, clothing, toys and household items.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, make sure you do! There’s also plenty of live entertainment and music on the weekends.

A mammoth project for Tule Springs

Last month, our City Council approved a partnership with Tahoe Mack, a local student who is designing a 16-foot statue of a Columbian mammoth, and the Protectors of Tule Springs. Tahoe’s mammoth will be displayed in the Villages of Tule Springs and will welcome guests to our unique urban national monument, the Tule Springs Fossil Beds.

The statue will be made with recycled metal that has been dumped illegally throughout the monument. Tahoe is working with artists Luis Varela-Rico and Joel Spencer to create a truly incredible and one-of-a-kind work.

Please help her gather the materials she needs and keep our wonderful national park clean! Join us for a November park cleanup.
