Officer Involved Shooting
North Las Vegas, Nevada – A 34-year-old man suffered non-life threatening injuries following an officer involved shooting last night in North Las Vegas.
On Friday, April 6, 2017, at about 6:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 4200 block of Galapagos Avenue regarding a disturbance involving 34-year-old Antonio Aquino. Officers investigating the disturbance found no crime had been committed and subsequently cleared the call.
At about 7:00 p.m. officers were dispatched to the same residence regarding gun shots being heard. Officers arrived and immediately set up a perimeter around the residence just before an officer involved shooting occurred.
The preliminary investigation indicates an officer of the North Las Vegas Police Department took up a position of containment while the situation was still unfolding in the 4200 block of Galapagos Avenue. Moments later, the officer saw Aquino arming himself with a firearm just before the officer discharged at least one round from his duty weapon, striking Aquino who sustained non-life threatening injuries. Aquino refused to surrender and the situation turned into a barricaded subject refusing to exit the residence. Due to the barricade, the S.W.A.T. team was called to the scene to assist.
On Saturday, April 7, 2018, around 3:30 a.m., the S.W.A.T. team made contact with Aquino inside the residence and he was taken into custody without incident. Aquino was transported to UMC Hospital for medical treatment. No officers were injured.
After he was released from the hospital, Aquino was subsequently booked at the Las Vegas City Detention Center for the charge of assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a gun/weapon where a person might be endangered. See attached booking photo.
This is the first officer involved shooting in North Las Vegas this year. The 27-year-old officer involved has been with the department since November of 2016 and has been placed on routine paid administrative leave, which is common in officer involved shootings. The name of the officer involved will be released after 48 hours.
This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is urged to call the North Las Vegas Police Department at 702-633-9111 or, to remain anonymous, call 702-385-5555.
