Message from Councilman Scott Black

February was a busy and successful month in Ward 3. Work has been progressing nicely on the installation and renovation of the 3,000 square foot modular building at Silver Mesa Recreation Center. This new facility will allow us to expand our senior programing, giving our awesome senior residents the opportunity to have more space, more activities and accommodate more participants.

On Saturday, Feb. 10, I was joined by nearly 50 volunteers to clean and paint the facility. We scrubbed interior walls, removed old carpeting and gave the exterior a nice new paint job.  Special thanks to our awesome North Las Vegas team lead by Cass Palmer, Angela Johnson and Tracey Farage for helping with this service project. We also had great support and help from our community partner Get Outdoors Nevada, who brought supplies and volunteers.

I also was able to join the seniors at Silver Mesa Recreation Center on Feb. 16 for an awesome event with food, fun and Valentine’s Day themed Bingo! We had other elected officials join in on the fun, including Assemblywoman Dina Neal and County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly.

I recently started holding “remote office hours” at Silver Mesa Recreation Center and Aliante Library. This is an opportunity for you to meet with me to talk about your ideas, suggestions and concerns about Ward 3. No need to drive to City Hall; just stop by on the date and time posted below!

The last week of February was Nevada Reading Week for our local schools. I was fortunate enough to visit students at five elementary schools throughout Ward 3. I read books to 13 classes and had some great discussions with groups of fifth graders about our city government and their civic duties and opportunities. I really enjoyed visiting the schools and reading to the students!
