Military and Veterans Appreciation Day
Thank you to all who
attended last month’s Nellis/Creech and Military Veterans Appreciation Day event
and joined us in paying tribute to our military members and veterans for their
service to our country. I would also like to thank our first responders, who
serve our community each and every day, diligently ensuring that our city is
safe for our residents and businesses that call North Las Vegas home.
A special thank you
goes out to our Vietnam veterans, who joined us this year with Vegas PBS to recognize
the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. Vegas PBS presented the war veterans with a
welcome home coin in appreciation of their service. I hope many of you had an
opportunity to view Ken Burns’ eight-part documentary on PBS. It is quite
interesting, very educational and documents a part of our country’s history
that should not be forgotten.
Lastly, a very big
thank you to our volunteers and the core team who made this event possible, including
my wife, Gloria; Jo Cato; co-chair Laura Coleman; and Jane Armstrong.
To the VIPs,
Explorers, Honor Guard members and entertainers who helped us with this
commemoration, and to Sy Nielson, Richard Lawhead of Sun City Veterans and
Jamerson Holloway for securing our entertainment and being our MC, your efforts
to help make this a successful event have not gone unnoticed. You all did tremendous work.
The
annual Safety Officers Recognition (SOAR) Awards Ceremony was held last month
at Las Vegas City Hall. I am proud to say that North Las Vegas Police
Officer Shane Allen and North Las Vegas Fire Department Captain Dean
Campbell, Engineer Ryan Aughenbaugh, Paramedic/Firefighter Michael Zimmermann
and Firefighter Joseph Meyer were recognized for their tremendous
community service accomplishments.
Officer Allen has spent countless hours volunteering his
time working with young people in our community and currently leads our future
generation of officers in the Police Department's Explorer Program.
Our Fire Department unit was recognized for their fast-thinking
actions while responding to an emergency situation.
Congratulations to Officer Allen, the fire unit and all of the
award recipients. Your work in this community does not go unnoticed!
Hats
off to all of the Best of the Best for Vulnerable Road User Safety award
winners, especially North Las Vegas Police Officers Tim Milligan and Micheal
"Sully" Sullivan.
Officer Milligan was named
Fatal Accident Reconstruction Specialist Officer of the Year, and Officer Sully
received an award for his work educating young children and students about
crosswalk safety.
A well-deserved honor for two
amazing officers!
