As September comes to
a close and the hot summer temperatures turn into comfortably warm days
and cool nights, I am reminded of why I love living in Southern Nevada and
particularly why I love North Las Vegas. This time of year is wonderful
for getting outdoors and taking advantage of our city’s beautiful parks and
trail systems.
As a member of the
Southern Nevada Health District Board of Health, I proudly encourage you to
visit the new www.gethealthyclarkcounty.org website
and click on the Neon to Nature link for a great resource for you and your
family. Learn about opportunities to get
outside and ride bikes, walk, jog or play together right here in North Las Vegas
or across the valley. We have great weather and lots of recreation
options. Let's get out and enjoy them!
On Sept. 13, the North
Las Vegas Police Department began its 40th session of the NLVPD Citizens Police
Academy. I am very honored to have the opportunity to participate in
this 10-week. 40-hour program along with 19 other residents. This is
a wonderful opportunity to receive an inside look into law enforcement in North
Las Vegas, and it is helping us gain a greater understanding of
and appreciation for what our brave men and women of the North Las Vegas Police
Department do on a daily basis to keep our neighborhoods, property and families
safe. I also think it will help participants be a better asset to law
enforcement. Plus, it’s a fun class!
The
fact that our police department is hosting its 40th session of the
Citizens Police Academy shows the high level and long-standing commitment
to partnership our officers have with the community to maintain the high level
of safety and quality of life our North Las Vegas residents deserve!
As a board member
representing the city on the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority board,
I had the awesome privilege of attending and speaking at the SNRHA Family Self
Sufficiency (FSS) graduation on Sept. 15. It was a wonderful event that
brought families together to celebrate the accomplishments of SNRHA
clients who worked with FSS counselors to set and accomplish
personal goals for education, employment, debt reduction, credit score
improvement and home ownership.
It was great to each of these
individuals tell their story of success. Many worked up to five years to
achieve their goals, and some have been so successful they no longer need
housing assistance from the SNRHA. What a great program!
Speaking of
beautiful Southern Nevada weather and the opportunity to get
outdoors, on Sept. 23, I participated in Mayor John Lee's second annual
Mountain Bike Ride with City of North Las Vegas employees and friends.
The weather was perfect, the trails were just right, and the company was
fantastic. And the Indian fry bread and Navajo tacos were a pretty
awesome way to end a great bike ride!
I also spent time with Cub Scout PAC 560 talking about government and
being good citizens to help the scouts fulfill a merit badge. These eager young men are excited to be a
helping hand in their community, and we fully support their involvement!
The
annual Safety Officers Recognition (SOAR) Awards Ceremony was held last month
at Las Vegas City Hall. I am proud to say that North Las Vegas Police
Officer Shane Allen and North Las Vegas Fire Department Captain Dean
Campbell, Engineer Ryan Aughenbaugh, Paramedic/Firefighter Michael Zimmermann
and Firefighter Joseph Meyer were recognized for their tremendous
community service accomplishments.
Officer Allen has spent countless hours volunteering his
time working with young people in our community and currently leads our future
generation of officers in the Police Department's Explorer Program.
Our Fire Department unit was recognized for their fast-thinking
actions while responding to an emergency situation.
Congratulations to Officer Allen, the fire unit and all of the
award recipients. Your work in this community does not go unnoticed!
Hats
off to all of the Best of the Best for Vulnerable Road User Safety award
winners, especially North Las Vegas Police Officers Tim Milligan and Micheal
"Sully" Sullivan.
Officer Milligan was named
Fatal Accident Reconstruction Specialist Officer of the Year, and Officer Sully
received an award for his work educating young children and students about
crosswalk safety.
A well-deserved honor for two
amazing officers!
