Debutantes’ community
service meeting
I had the great
pleasure of hosting a community service meeting for a wonderful organization
that has deep ties to our community. Les Femmes Douze was founded in 1964 to
mentor young women and prepare them for college. I was honored to meet many of
these motivated and intelligent young women as they presented their community
service projects.
Debutantes are
required to volunteer a minimum of 50 hours. One of the Debs went to India to
assist a medical team. Another volunteered at our very own Aliante Library and
enjoyed assisting patrons.
The Valley View community hosted
its seventh annual reunion picnic on Saturday, Aug. 19. Current and past
neighbors gathered at Valley View Park for music, food and lots of fun. I was
joined by longtime friends Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson and City of North Las
Vegas Planning Commissioner Al Greer. I am so thankful to be a part of such a
close-knit community.
Councilman Isaac Barron
and I attended a vigil for peace and unity Aug. 20 with the First African
Methodist Episcopal (FAME) church in collaboration with the Anti-Defamation
League and the Jewish community. Faith
leaders, community partners and local representatives shared their thoughts and
encouragement to stand together in peace and love.
North Las Vegas’ Brooks
Tot Lot reopened Aug. 23 with added amenities and an updated look. The upgraded
features include new swings, renovated play areas, new bench seating and shade
structures, and a fantastic mural painted by dozens of generous volunteers.
This project would not
have been possible without the support of Wells Fargo and the Outside Las Vegas
Foundation. Thank you to these wonderful organizations for their assistance with
the park renovation and ongoing support of our community.
North Las Vegas Parks Director Cass Palmer, Outside Las Vegas Executive
Director Mauricia Baca, Wells Fargo Regional President Kirk Clausen and North
Las Vegas Mayor John Lee celebrate the grand reopening of Brooks Tot Lot.

I had the privilege to
participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Legacy Traditional
School in North Las Vegas. This beautiful new campus will serve more than 1,000
students in grades K-8. The event was well attended by community leaders, students,
parents and teachers. Best of luck and great success to all of the 2017-18
students in our community!
The City of North Las Vegas is in
the process of conducting an Assessment of Fair Housing, or AFH, which examines
how well city residents can access affordable housing and live in neighborhoods
with access to good schools, transportation, good jobs and healthy
environments.
A number of meetings were held Aug. 14 with residents and stakeholders that
provided initial input into the draft AFH plan. Please take the time to review
the AFH plan, available here,
and share with us any input that you may have.
We are holding a follow-up meeting from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14 at
Zion Methodist Church, 2108 Revere St., to seek additional input and comments.
We hope to see you there.
