A message from Councilman Black
August was a great month
here in Ward 3 with many exciting things happening!
We all know that back to
school can be a stressful time for parents and students as they prepare for the
first day of classes. I had the opportunity to partner with some local
motorcycle riding clubs to offer free backpacks and school supplies to 450
students, during a special giveaway on Aug. 14, the first day of school.
It was a beautiful day on the lawn of City Hall, and it was great to see
children and parents line up to greet members of the Second II None Motorcycle Club
to receive a backpack. The backpack quality was fantastic, and they came
in nice bright colors that the kids loved! To top it off, club members
had their amazing motorcycles on display for the children and families to
enjoy.

On Tuesday, Aug. 22, I
had the privilege to participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new
Legacy Traditional School. This beautiful new facility was built in the
center of Ward 3 and will serve more than 1,000 students in grades K-8.
The event was well attended by students, parents and teachers. What a
great addition to our North Las Vegas community!
I also had the good
fortune to meet and spend time with a few dozen North Las Vegas seniors at the Silver
Mesa Recreation Center. We became acquainted, shared some good laughs and
most importantly discussed the challenges and opportunities that members of our
North Las Vegas senior community face. I took detailed notes and will do
my homework so that together we can accomplish great things that will improve
the quality of life for our senior population. What a wonderful group of
folks!

Comment on the draft Assessment of Fair Housing
The City of North Las Vegas is in
the process of conducting an Assessment of Fair Housing, or AFH, which examines
how well city residents can access affordable housing and live in neighborhoods
with access to good schools, transportation, good jobs and healthy
environments.
A number of meetings were held Aug. 14 with residents and stakeholders that
provided initial input into the draft AFH plan. Please take the time to review
the AFH plan, available here,
and share with us any input that you may have.
We are holding a follow-up meeting from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14 at
Zion Methodist Church, 2108 Revere St., to seek additional input and comments.
We hope to see you there.
