Scholarships awarded to four local students

I was honored to join the Cesar Chavez Day Las Vegas Committee to award four promising local students college scholarships for use at any Southern Nevada Institution.  Each of these young men and women have demonstrated perseverance and shown a passion for using education as a tool to empower the Latino Community.

Congratulations to Linda Loya, Luis Vasquez, Jose Martinez and Johanna Melgar Guzman. Keep up the great work!

Have your voice be heard: Comment on the draft Assessment of Fair Housing

The City of North Las Vegas is in the process of conducting an Assessment of Fair Housing, or AFH, which examines how well city residents can access affordable housing and live in neighborhoods with access to good schools, transportation, good jobs and healthy environments.

A number of meetings were held Aug. 14 with residents and stakeholders that provided initial input into the draft AFH plan. Please take the time to review the AFH plan, available here, and share with us any input that you may have.

We are holding a follow-up meeting from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14 at Zion Methodist Church, 2108 Revere St., to seek additional input and comments. We hope to see you there.

Please contact Jim Haye at (702) 633-1441 with questions.

Join us this weekend: Nellis/Creech Military and Veterans Appreciation Day

Craig Ranch Regional Park will be the site of a community extravaganza this Saturday honoring our service members, veterans and first responders. Join us as we celebrate the sacrifices and dedication of the men and women who serve our city and country. There will be food, music, vendors and lots of good vibes!

As part of our “Thank You Celebration,” free lunch will be provided to all attendees with a valid first responder, military or veteran’s identification.

A special “Welcome Home” tribute will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War and honor and Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice. Vietnam veterans will be presented with 50th anniversary commemorative coins.

The free event has a stacked music lineup with stellar performers, including:

·         Rob Garrett, America's most popular Neil Diamond tribute act

·         Mama’s Wranglers, a Las Vegas-based group ranging in age from 14 to 24 who sing in four-part harmonies, dance up a storm with clogging and play a variety of instruments

·         Mr. Entertainment Phil Flowers, an American performer who has shared the stage with Aretha Franklin, Céline Dion, Patti Labelle and The Beach Boys. After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Flowers was asked to write a song dedicated to the victims and performed his stirring tribute “Standing Tall” in New York City’s Central Park. His performance Sept. 9 will be dedicated to the families in Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey.

·         Sons of Soul, featuring an eclectic mix of contemporary R&B and funk favorites.

·         Gregg Austin’s M-Town & More, showcasing classic Motown sound

This wonderful event is free and open to the public. The fun kicks off at 11 a.m. at Craig Ranch Regional Park, 628 W. Craig Road, North Las Vegas. See you there!
