Join us this weekend: Nellis/Creech Military and Veterans Appreciation Day

Craig Ranch Regional Park will be the site of a community extravaganza this Saturday honoring our service members, veterans and first responders. Join us as we celebrate the sacrifices and dedication of the men and women who serve our city and country. There will be food, music, vendors and lots of good vibes!

As part of our “Thank You Celebration,” free lunch will be provided to all attendees with a valid first responder, military or veteran’s identification.

A special “Welcome Home” tribute will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War and honor and Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice. Vietnam veterans will be presented with 50th anniversary commemorative coins.

The free event has a stacked music lineup with stellar performers, including:

·         Rob Garrett, America's most popular Neil Diamond tribute act

·         Mama’s Wranglers, a Las Vegas-based group ranging in age from 14 to 24 who sing in four-part harmonies, dance up a storm with clogging and play a variety of instruments

·         Mr. Entertainment Phil Flowers, an American performer who has shared the stage with Aretha Franklin, Céline Dion, Patti Labelle and The Beach Boys. After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Flowers was asked to write a song dedicated to the victims and performed his stirring tribute “Standing Tall” in New York City’s Central Park. His performance Sept. 9 will be dedicated to the families in Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey.

·         Sons of Soul, featuring an eclectic mix of contemporary R&B and funk favorites.

·         Gregg Austin’s M-Town & More, showcasing classic Motown sound

This wonderful event is free and open to the public. The fun kicks off at 11 a.m. at Craig Ranch Regional Park, 628 W. Craig Road, North Las Vegas. See you there!

A visit with the Rotary Club

I was recently invited to speak at our North Las Vegas Rotary Club meeting at Los Prados clubhouse. I was happy to provide members with updates –about goings on in our community and answer many questions.

I’m also very pleased to announce that the Rotary Club will be be supporting our Nellis/Creech Military and Veterans Appreciation Day event Sept. 9 at Craig Ranch Park.

Thank you to our Community Watch volunteers!

As a 12-year community watch member, I had the opportunity to attend the annual Community Watch Appreciation dinner at Sun City Aliante Clubhouse and receive wonderful service pins with my fellow volunteers. The dinner was held in the Vista room and featured Asian cultural dance, decorations and delicious food. Thank you to our North Las Vegas Police Department, particularly Chief Perez and our dedicated Community Services personnel, who make this event a yearly success.

Back-to-school success

I was thrilled to take part in a great event to ensure our local children have the tools they need to succeed in school this year. SkyView YMCA hosted a back-to-school event and provided over 70 students with backpacks full of school supplies and snacks. Thank you to Mike and Charles of SkyView YMCA and Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson for their generosity.

Touring a local business

Councilman Scott Black and I had the opportunity to tour the manufacturing plant of Advance Polybag, Inc., a North Las Vegas company that produces T-shirt bags and produce bags. The minority-owned business, .located at 4900 Engineers Way, was founded in 1986 and has been known in the industry for excellent quality, service and printing. Keep up the great work!

Shade Tree women’s shelter fundraising for transitional housing program

For almost 30 years, The Shade Tree has provided shelter to homeless and abused women and children in crisis. Last year, more than 5,100 people received services.

However, because of rising costs, program cutbacks and changes in how the federal government is approaching homelessness, The Shade Tree recently announced that it will have to suspend its Third Floor Transitional Housing Program until private investment is secured.

The transitional program costs $2.3 million per year. Government and foundation grants help offset the cost, but The Shade Tree needs help from our community to be able to continue providing these services.

I was honored to help The Shade Tree kick off a fundraising campaign to ensure the organization can continue to provide great services to our community. If you would like to donate to The Share Tree, please visit www.theshadetree.org

Noah’s Animal House is also accepting donations. The animal shelter is a full-service boarding facility right next to The Shade Tree that shelters and cares for animals whose owners are staying at The Shade Tree. Visit www.noahsanimalhouse.org to donate or shop for animal-friendly gifts. The organization also accepts donations of animal food, toys, beds and cleaning supplies.

Have your voice be heard: Comment on the draft Assessment of Fair Housing

The City of North Las Vegas is in the process of conducting an Assessment of Fair Housing, or AFH, which examines how well city residents can access affordable housing and live in neighborhoods with access to good schools, transportation, good jobs and healthy environments.

A number of meetings were held Aug. 14 with residents and stakeholders that provided initial input into the draft AFH plan. Please take the time to review the AFH plan, available here, and share with us any input that you may have.

We are holding a follow-up meeting from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14 at Zion Methodist Church, 2108 Revere St., to seek additional input and comments. We hope to see you there.

Please contact Jim Haye at (702) 633-1441 with questions.
