Keeping our four-legged friends safe
I’m very proud
and happy to announce that our City Council recently made some very important
and much needed changes to our animal ordinance.
We unanimously voted to expand
the definition of animal cruelty to include animal hoarding, and we required
that indoor pet stores and open air swap meets sell only animals from
rescue groups or shelters. Currently, North Las Vegas doesn’t have any pet
stores that sell “puppy mill” animals, but our proactive policy will prevent
puppy mill animals from ever being sold in our city. At one time, 40,000-plus
abandoned animals were euthanized in the Las Vegas Valley; our new laws will
save the lives of these animals by prioritizing adoption and preventing the
influx of pets from out-of-state breeding mills.
Also, after
extensive vetting by our Police Department and Animal Services officers, and after
lengthy conversations with animal advocates, our City Council added a provision
to allow rodeos in North Las Vegas. This was an important move, both
economically and culturally, and was widely supported in our community. The law
prevents any type of inhumane treatment of the animals participating.
You can read
more about the change and our other animal laws here: cityofnorthlasvegas.com/SirePub/mtgviewer.aspx?meetid=856&doctype=AGENDA
More new laws to prevent the inhumane
treatment of animals and to hold animal abusers accountable will be coming in
the next several months, and I will share those details with you as well.
Thank you to our local nonprofit groups, including
the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society and Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, who
took the time to work with us to improve this ordinance and to help
us better protect the lives and quality of life of our animal friends,
who are family members to so many of us.
Nineteen new North Las Vegas firefighters hit the streets
this month after graduating from the North Las Vegas Fire Academy. I’m proud to
say this was one of the biggest classes we have ever graduated!
The new firefighters and firefighter/paramedics completed 16
weeks of intensive training and now are out in our community helping to keep
all of our residents and businesses safe and secure.
To all of the graduates, congratulations! We are proud of
you!
During a recent awards
ceremony, the City and Police Department had the honor of recognizing dozens of
men and women in uniform who keep us safe and make North Las Vegas a great
place to live and do business.
A total of 80 awards were
presented to North Las Vegas police officers, first responders, civilian
employees and volunteers.
The ceremony was an
opportunity for us to highlight the extraordinary actions of so many of our
employees, who go above and beyond to save lives, be heroes and selflessly give
of themselves for others.
A big congratulations to
all of the award recipients. We appreciate you!

I had the pleasure of representing the City of North Las
Vegas recently during an informative discussion with our newly elected U.S.
Senator Catherine Cortez Masto.
The luncheon at the Four Seasons was sponsored
in part by former Congressman Jon Porter and was led by Bill Noonan, Boyd Gaming
executive and Metro Chamber of Commerce chairman.
The City’s annual Raul Elizondo Day is always a bittersweet
one. On the one hand, we remember a fallen hero taken from us far too soon. On
the other, we get to spend the day with our wonderful North Las Vegas students,
who show so much love and respect for our officers and this great community.
North Las Vegas Officer Raul Elizondo was killed in 1995 in
the line of duty, but his legacy lives on in his namesake school, where our fantastic
police officers have formed a strong bond with students. On March 8, they all
came together once again for breakfast and lunch, a memorial ceremony, a parade
and story time in the classroom.
Congratulations to Cummins Inc. on the grand opening of its new 50,000
square foot service facility in North Las Vegas! The grand opening was a blast,
with special guest NASCAR superstar Jimmie Johnson.
Cummins’ expansion to its new facility at 2807 E. Alexander
Road adds more than $11 million of investment in our community and is proof
that our easy business processes are helping companies succeed, grow and create
jobs.
The day after the grand opening, Cummins hosted a job fair to
hire for several technician and other positions.

I had such a wonderful
time participating in Nevada Reading Week with students at Somerset Academy. They asked
very smart questions and shared lots of great stories with me!
Thank you to our local Girl Scouts, Troops 627, 621, 999 and 185, for
joining us at our City Council meeting to lead the pledge and fold our Combat
Wounded Veterans flag. We were happy to celebrate Girl Scout Week with you!
North Las Vegas is proud to be a Hidden Heroes City! We are
working hard to increase awareness and resources for our military and veteran
caregivers. Most of these women and men consider their work to simply be part
of their civic and patriotic duty, but they truly are military heroes in every
sense of the word, and they often go unrecognized. We are thankful for all that
they do for our community and its residents, and we were happy to honor them
with a proclamation at City Hall.
Join us for some springtime family fun at Silver Mesa Recreation Center!
