NLVPD Honors Fallen Police Officer Raul Elizondo
North Las Vegas, Nevada – On Wednesday, March 8, 2017 from 8:40 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the North Las Vegas Police Department will hold its 18th Annual Raul Elizondo Day at ElizondoElementary School located at 4865 Goldfield Street in North Las Vegas. The school was dedicated in 1998 and named in honor of Officer Raul Elizondo, who was killed in the line of duty on January 30, 1995.
Police officers from across Southern Nevada will join students for a day of events which will include classroom activities, a ceremony honoring the fallen officer, police demonstrations and a parade of public safety and emergency response vehicles.
The schedule of events is as follows:
8:40 a.m. - Flag Raising Ceremony
9:00 a.m. - Breakfast
10:30 a.m. – Classroom Visits
12:00 p.m. - Lunch
1:00 p.m. - Ceremony
1:30 p.m. - Honor Parade with Static Display
3:00 p.m. - End of Event
All members of the Las Vegas press are cordially invited to attend and share in this remembrance of Officer Raul Elizondo.
Officer Raul Elizondo's Biography:
Raul P. Elizondo was born on July 21, 1967, in Mesa, Arizona and raised in Henderson, Nevada. Raul graduated from Basic High School in 1985, and was a member of the school's 1984 championship wrestling team. After high school, he went on to pursue a degree in Marketing from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, graduating in 1991. On March 13, 1992, he was hired as a North Las Vegas police officer.
On November 12, 1994, Officer Elizondo was honored at the 13th Annual Policeman's Ball. He received a commendation from the Chief of Police, Ronald Lusch, for his dedicated service, outstanding job performance, and valor above and beyond the line of duty. Officer Elizondo was a member of the North Las Vegas Police Officers Association and received the highest award possible from his fellow officers when he was honored as the "1994 Police Officer of the Year."
About ninety minutes before the end of his shift on January 30, 1995, Officer Raul Elizondo, 27-years-old, stopped a suspicious man acting erratically in a neighborhood near Evans Avenue and Carroll Street. In a brief altercation with the man, Officer Elizondo was fatally shot. The assailant exchanged gunfire with police before ultimately taking his own life.
Officer Raul P. Elizondo will be remembered for his dedication to the North Las Vegas community, his personal commitment to serve those in it, and his willingness to help others. He is survived by his mother, Ann, his sister, Ann, his two younger brothers, Robert and Paul, and his family of fellow law enforcement officers.
