The state of North Las Vegas is great

Our 2017 State of the City luncheon was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who attended. We had a sold-out crowd of more than 700 people!

Our City has come a long, long way in the past few years, and we are pleased to report that the state of North Las Vegas is GREAT!

In our city in just over three years, there has been:

  • A 7,000% increase in new job creation
  • A 2,000% increase in new business space
  • A 4,000% increase in new capital investment

And more good news is on the horizon! We have had a tremendous turnaround in North Las Vegas, and our best days remain ahead. Stay tuned; we'll have lots more exciting progress to report in the coming months.

Tule Springs walking trail coming to North Las Vegas

I am so proud and excited to announce that the first walking trail in the Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument will be developed in North Las Vegas, near the new Villages at Tule Springs master-planned community!

Our urban national monument will become more accessible thanks to an innovative public-private partnership between the city, the National Park Service and KBS, the developers of The Villages at Tule Springs. The trail agreement is a prime example of creative problem solving and strong collaboration for the good of the public. We can't wait to share our urban national monument with the world!

Crews recently broke ground on The Villages at Tule Springs development and are busy grading the site. The master-planned community will include commercial amenities, mixed-use spaces, schools, a police substation, a fire station and approximately 8,600 homes. Model homes are expected to open this summer!

The project is anticipated to pump more than $3 billion in economic impact into our community over the next 15 years.

Gratitude for our public safety heroes

The North Las Vegas Fire Department proudly honored four fallen firefighters during this year’s annual Firefighter Award Ceremony at City Hall.

Paramedic/Firefighter William “Bill” Harnedy, Firefighter Dean Tajima, Captain Yaphet Miller and Division Chief Brent Cooper each were recognized for his years of service and sacrifice to the North Las Vegas community with an annual award named in his honor.

Several of the fallen firefighters’ families attended the ceremony to help present the awards to the inaugural recipients.

In addition, six of our firefighters were promoted and several more were recognized with awards. A young fire department Explorer was commended with an award during the ceremony, as was the North Las Vegas Fire Department Honor Guard.

Kudos to all of our public safety heroes for their outstanding commitment and dedication to our community!

New charter school coming to North Las Vegas

Construction recently began on Legacy Traditional Schools’ North Las Vegas campus. The school at Valley Drive and La Madre Way will be beautiful, spanning 80,000 square feet with 41 classrooms, several playgrounds, a cafeteria, a kitchen and more.

It's very telling of all of our city's successes that Legacy, which is based in Arizona, chose North Las Vegas as the site for its first new market expansion in the country! Big things are happening in our city, and the world is paying attention!

Legacy will open this fall in time for the new school year.

Thank you to all who donated

A very special thank you to the more than 100 donors who visited City Hall last week to donate blood in memory of fallen North Las Vegas Police Detective Chad Parque.

We were able to save more than 300 lives in his honor and come together as a community to support the men and women in blue who risk their lives every day protecting our residents.

And a big thank you to the North Las Vegas Police Officers Association and the Red Cross of Southern Nevada for their partnership in this event!

Q & A at Sun City Aliante

Thank you, Sun City Aliante, for hosting me and Councilman Richard Cherchio for a Q&A session with residents. We always love taking engaging questions and discussing all of the exciting development projects underway in North Las Vegas!

Give back to our community: Volunteers in Police Service

I’d like to introduce you to a very special program we have here in the city: the North Las Vegas Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) program.

VIPS members are a group of ordinary citizens dedicated to extraordinary community service and public education through the North Las Vegas Police Department. They are a trained and highly motivated force of volunteer civilians who perform non-hazardous police services for the citizens of North Las Vegas. Their efforts contribute to a better quality of life and a safer, more secure community.

The Volunteers in Police Service program grew from the Citizens Corps, which was created after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, to coordinate volunteers and make communities safer, stronger and better prepared to respond to emergencies. Councilman Richard Cherchio brought this amazing program to our city.

Our North Las Vegas VIPS program currently has about 25 volunteers.

Potential members must fill out an interest form and pass a background check, then complete a 40-hour training academy. Classes include instruction on crime prevention, identifying public hazards, recognizing and reporting suspicious activity, communication skills, use of radio equipment and defensive driving.

VIPS volunteers, once trained, patrol businesses, parks, industrial centers and neighborhoods; control traffic flow at crash scenes or during traffic light malfunctions; conduct property checks; monitor graffiti and other neighborhood nuisances; perform crowd control at special events; and provide resources to citizens.

To volunteer, you must be 21 years old and be willing to work 16 hours a month in days and increments of your choosing. For more information, email VIPS@cityofnorthlasvegas.com or visit cityofnorthlasvegas.com/department/police/citizenpatrol.
