Building on our successes for 2017

Holiday greetings, everyone!

Over the past year, I and my colleagues on the North Las Vegas City Council have worked many hours and attended many meetings to bring diverse businesses, more amenities and new opportunities into our city. In Ward 4, I have made, and will continue to make, every effort to address any concerns or questions brought to my attention by residents.

This coming year no doubt will bring challenges and issues to be solved, but I also expect lots of good news and opportunities! Among our priorities for 2017: promoting the Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, supporting the development of the Villages at Tule Springs, helping businesses small and large grow, and recruiting well-known restaurants and retailers to expand in our community.

On Jan. 26, we will host North Las Vegas’ 21st annual State of the City address, which is a wonderful opportunity to hear about some of our recent achievements and learn about what we have planned for 2017. I invite everyone to join us for a lovely lunch and informative presentation, which will take place in Ward 4 at Aliante Casino + Hotel +Spa! For tickets, please visit cityofnorthlasvegas.com.

Now for some well-deserved praises: I want to thank our Master Association Board and committee members, as well as the Sun City Board of Directors and committee members for always being willing to help the city, for offering the use of their management offices and Sun City's Vista room whenever they are needed and for working with me and the North Las Vegas Police Department to continuously improve communication and bolster the strong services the city offers to residents.

I, along with my wife, Gloria, and our little rescue, Sookie, wish all of you and your families a very merry Christmas, a very happy Hanukkah, a very joyous Kwanzaa and a very happy new year. May your holiday season be filled with health, happiness and love.

Lastly, a special thank you to all of our military members, both active and retired, who protect our most precious asset: the greatest country on Earth, our U.S.A. We thank you all for your service!

Enjoy your holiday, be safe, and cheers to a wonderful 2017!

Annual tree lighting

The city's annual Christmas tree lighting was a great success!

Thank you to everyone who attended, and thank you to the Sun City Aliante Treble-Makers for volunteering to sing for us at City Hall. You are amazing!

Bringing cheer to our seniors

Thank you to all of the wonderful staffers and volunteers at James Seastrand Helping Hands of North Las Vegas for once again providing a senior Christmas party for more than 100 people. The agency's hard work to make this special day a reality for these seniors who have no means of transportation is a blessing. Thank you also to Three Square who assisted in making this event possible.

This was the first year entertainment was provided, and it was great, thanks to family group "Mama's Wranglers," who volunteered their time and talent to make this day very special for all who attended.

Veterans Village ribbon cutting

It was my privilege to be invited by Arnie Stalk, founder of Veteran's Village, to a recent ribbon cutting for Veterans Village 2 in Las Vegas. It's both our goal to work together to have a ribbon cutting for Veteran's Village 3 in North Las Vegas soon!

Arnie and his team of volunteers and supporters do an amazing job of providing shelter and food for our homeless vets. Thank you for your service, Arnie!

YMCA bingo!

I had a fun time calling bingo and donating gifts to seniors at the Skyview YMCA with Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson, Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick and Assemblywoman Daniele Monroe-Moreno. Giving is what the holiday season is all about.

Thank you to our first responders

Thank you to our wonderful North Las Vegas Fire Department and North Las Vegas Police Department for making the holiday season brighter for children and families in our community.

The North Las Vegas Fire Department sponsored a hugely successful toy drive, while the North Las Vegas Police Department provided toys and treats for children suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

Recycle your tree

When the time comes, please recycle your Christmas tree. Four recycling locations will be available in North Las Vegas this year, through Jan. 15. Click here for more information.

More than 20,000 trees were recycled last year, saving space in the landfill that's equivalent to 10 school buses. Let's beat that record this year!

The trees are turned into mulch for local landscaping and dust control projects.

Fun, educational library program for kids

Children can explore, create and experiment with Full STEAM Ahead! This 60-minute program, designed for kids ages 3 to 9, incorporates literacy with hands-on science, technology, engineering, art and math activities. The workshops are designed to help children develop critical thinking skills while having fun.

The program is free and open to the public, and no registration is required.

Let's keep our furry friends safe this season

cat dog

It's cold this winter, and many animal friends need our help. Please be sure to keep your pets indoors and provide them with a thick, warm bed. If you walk your dog when the temperature dips, consider suiting him or her up in a doggy sweater and/or paw protectors. And as any time of the year, never leave an animal in a car.

Also, stay tuned: Early next year, I'll be coordinating a donation drive to collect towels, blankets and other supplies for stray animals. I'd appreciate your support!
