Nellis/Creech and Military Appreciation Day a success
Thank you to everyone who attended the Nellis/Creech and Military Veterans Appreciation Day event at Craig Ranch Regional Park. It was a huge success! We received wonderful feedback from many veterans, military members and first responders, who were overcome by the support and love our community shared.
The North Las Vegas City Council designated the second weekend in September every year as Nellis/Creech and Armed Forces Military Veterans Appreciation Weekend, meaning the Nellis/Creech and Military Veterans Appreciation Day festival will be back annually. Save the date for 2017!

Did you know that more than 75 local children are diagnosed with cancer each year? In Southern Nevada, childhood cancer rates are on the rise, and we wanted to do something to help. Our City Council declared September 2016 as #shineGOLD month. We are partnering with the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada in the battle to wipe out this awful disease. Join the effort by helping to raise awareness, volunteering or donating to support research and family outreach. For more information, visit candlelightersnv.org.

Kudos to North Las Vegas Police Officer Michael Harris, who recently was honored by the Rotary Clubs of Southern Nevada at a Safety Officers Award Recognition (S.O.A.R.) ceremony. Celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Spanish program at Expertise Cosmetology School. Congratulations, and here's to the next 10 years!
I had the recent honor of presenting a proclamation declaring Sept. 16, 2016 as "Juan Gabriel Day" in North Las Vegas to pay tribute to the late music icon, who died in August. The work of Juan Gabriel transcended borders and generations, and he will be greatly missed.
During a beautiful ceremony, the Las Vegas International Press Association honored Juan Gabriel by naming him the lifetime king of Las Fiestas Patrias and issuing him the Galardón Diamante for his brilliant career and legacy.

Do you know what to do in an emergency?
September is National Preparedness Month. Our goal is to educate and empower the residents of North Las Vegas to prepare for and know how to respond to all types of emergencies, including natural disasters, long-term power outages and even terrorist attacks.
Preparedness enables residents to take care of themselves and their families after an incident until government assistance is available. Among the recommended measures:
- Register with Southern Nevada on the Alert (https://sonevada.onthealert.com) to receive notification in the case of an emergency.
- Assemble a Family Disaster Kit with water, food to last three to five days, a can opener, a flashlight and batteries, a wrench to turn off utilities if necessary, dust masks and a First Aid kit.
- Create a family emergency plan.
- Download the Southern Nevada Community Preparedness mobile app.
- Attend outreach events and presentations to learn more about emergency preparedness.
The City of North Las Vegas Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security hosts multiple outreach events throughout the year, during which staff distribute information booklets and emergency kit lists. Several upcoming events are scheduled:
- Sept. 20: Silver Mesa Recreation Center, 4025 Allen Lane, North Las Vegas 89032 (10-11:30 a.m.)
- Sept. 27: Walmart, 3950 W. Lake Mead Blvd., North Las Vegas (time to be announced)
- Sept/Oct.: Sun City Aliante, North Las Vegas (date/time to be announced)
Don’t wait. Communicate. Make your emergency plan today.
