GREAT SHAKE OUT EARTHQUAKE DRILL

North Las Vegas, Nevada — At 10:20 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, the City of North Las Vegas will join the nation in participating in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill.

The Great ShakeOut is an annual opportunity for people in homes, schools, business and organizations to practice what to do during and after an earthquake and to improve preparedness. The national event is organized to encourage people and groups to update emergency plans and supplies, secure homes and offices to prevent injuries and damage, and to learn how to recover quickly from an earthquake or other emergency.

During the drill, strobe lights at North Las Vegas City Hall and other city facilities will activate, an audio recording announcement will play through PA fire systems, and buildings will be evacuated of employees and customers. Once buildings are empty, safety officials will conduct a full review of each city facility to check structures and systems. Members of the North Las Vegas Fire Department will be on-site to monitor and observe the drill.

North Las Vegas schools that are part of the Clark County School District also will conduct earthquake drills. Each North Las Vegas fire station has been assigned a school to monitor.

Emergency preparedness is essential to saving lives and minimizing damage. Members of the media are encouraged to attend and document this drill.
