Curator Carmen Beals will moderate a panel of artists and elders, including Chase McCurdy, Iyana Esters, Harold Bradford, Jackie Brantley and Alma Faye McDonald. Through the moderated conversation, visitors will learn from the artists how history is reflected in their work and the elders will provide insight into what life was like growing up in Nevada.

This program is held in conjunction with "Rhythm and Resilience: Black Vegas," currently on display in the Civic Center Gallery through Aug. 20. The exhibition was curated by Carmen Beals, narrated by Claytee White, and features artwork from Chase McCurdy, Iyana Esters and Harold Bradford.

This event is free and open to the public.  A complimentary two-hour parking validation is available to those who park in the garage at 500 S. Main St.

Whether you’re a seasoned StorySLAM fan or new to the art of live storytelling, this intimate community event invites you to laugh, reflect and connect through the power of real stories told by real people. City Reopens Utility Tax/Sewer 2025 Rebate Program

Low-Income Residents Ages 60+ May Make Appointments

Now At Several City Of Las Vegas Centers To Apply

The Utility Tax Rebate Program offered for years by the city of Las Vegas to low-income seniors who reside within the city limits now has higher income limits to qualify. Those who did not qualify before may qualify now under the newly adjusted income limits. New applications may be filed with the city Aug. 1-Oct. 15, 2026, for rebates of franchise taxes and sewer fees paid in 2025. Application forms are not available online; applicants must apply at one of the centers listed below. Residents can call the center they wish to attend for an appointment.

Seniors age 60 and older who qualify may receive a rebate on the franchise tax they paid for local utilities throughout the 2025 year. These utility bills include NV Energy electric power, Century Link or Cox Communications telephone bills and Southwest Gas natural gas charges. The bills must be in the name of the person filing for the rebate. Applicants must make an income of less than 150% of the federal poverty level, which is $23,475 for an individual or $31,725 for a household of two. See the chart for other household sizes.

Applicants must bring copies of all their 2025 local NV Energy, Southwest Gas and CenturyLink/Cox Communications telephone bills, photo identification, proof of income, proof of bill payment and other supporting documentation to fill out an application. Identification and bills must match physical address.

Low-income homeowners ages 60+ who qualify also may apply for a partial rebate of the annual sewer bill on their primary residence located within the city of Las Vegas; bring copies of your bill(s) and proof of payment for the 2025 sewer charges. Las Vegas Recruiting For AmeriCorps Program Positions

64 Part-Time Adult Positions For 10 Or 12 Months

A Wonderful Opportunity For Seniors!

The city of Las Vegas is recruiting 64 AmeriCorps Volunteers. Applicants must be at least 17-years-old with a high school diploma or GED by the end of the service term and be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. This is a wonderful opportunity for seniors!

The AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA programs are a network of national service programs that engage more than 200,000 Americans each year by helping local organizations expand capacity and make change. AmeriCorps volunteers make a vital impact in the community through action and leadership, providing services such as youth education interventions, college and career supports to young adults, connecting families to resources and helping meet other critical needs in the community.

The 64 positions are for part-time commitments of service in 10-month and 12-month terms. These AmeriCorps volunteers will provide services to the community in the following projects:

• The Batteries Included/NextGen youth leadership program serving middle and high school teens in Las Vegas, designed to ensure teens reach their greatest potential by providing out-of-school educational and life skills activities.
• The Community Navigator Program that connects students, families and community members to resources and service providers in some of Las Vegas’ highest-need communities.
• The Strong Future Technology training program, which provides opportunities to support youth and young adults, ages 16-24, in gaining skills in technology to prepare them for in-demand tech careers.
• ReInvent Schools, which focuses on improving academic excellence for every child by creating a strong collective culture among students, families and educators to ensure academic achievement and lifelong success, including literacy tutors, chronic absenteeism and nutrition mentors.
• Strong Start GO Ambassadors for the mobile pre-kindergarten program, which offers children and families free high-quality, early-education programming, including family engagement workshops and activities.
• Strong Start Ambassadors to provide academic interventions and community resources assistance for the Strong Start Academy Elementary School students.
• Community Affairs Ambassador to aid in developing and coordinating a calendar of community events, resource fairs and workshops to increase awareness, engagement and participation of diverse communities.
• Youth Fire Prevention Assistants, who will provide education to youth about fire safety, fire survival and the serious legal, financial and social costs of setting fires.

Benefits to AmeriCorps Participants include:

• A stipend of up to $24,962* for a one-year service term;
• An education award of up to $7,395* upon completion of service year;
• Eligibility for federal student loan forbearance or deferment;
• Professional development and training opportunities; and
• The opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children and families.

    *Service hours, stipend, and education award amounts vary based on position and successful completion of the program.
