From The City Manager
As many of you are aware, last Friday morning we had a serious incident involving two employees in the Public Works department. This incident resulted in the death of one of our employees, Joey McLean. Joey had been employed as a maintenance worker in the Public Works department since 2018. Please keep Joey’s family, friends and loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time.
I also want to share with you all that the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has booked 31-year-old Brysen Kim into Clark County Detention Center as a result of their investigation. He has been employed with the city as a maintenance worker since January 2025. While the investigation is ongoing, additional details are limited.

The Southern Nevada Health District is encouraging parents and guardians to schedule required school vaccinations now to avoid long waits during the late summer rush. Appointments are available at Health District clinics in several locations for students entering kindergarten, seventh grade and 12th grade. The Health District also offers $20 sports physicals through the Southern Nevada Community Health Center. Las Vegas Civic Center Life-Safety Power System Test Friday, June 19
Facilities will conduct a life-safety power system test in the buildings at the Civic Center complex Friday, June 19. The goal is to ensure that our life safety systems, automatic transfer switches, backup generators, and uninterrupted power source systems function as designed when utility power is lost.
Testing Schedule
-
June 19: Full building shunt trip test – At 7:30 a.m., all power will go off and emergency generators will provide emergency power for lights and critical systems. Smoke control systems on all floors will be tested. Power will be restored as soon as possible, and an announcement will be made that testing is complete.
Risks & Considerations
- Las Vegas Civic Center building were shunted during construction, so we believe everything should be in working order. This test is critical for confirming systems will operate as intended, but it also carries the possibility of unforeseen issues when switching back to normal power.
Facilities is providing this information in advance so leadership is aware of the schedule, potential impacts and the importance of validating these life-safety systems.

It's Okay To Not Feel Okay
Life doesn't always give us time to prepare for difficult moments. Whether it's stress, uncertainty, loss, change or simply the weight of everyday responsibilities, there are times when carrying everything can feel harder than usual. If you're feeling a little off right now, that's okay.
We often tell ourselves to "push through" or "get back to normal," but sometimes what
|
we need most is permission to acknowledge that we're human. Stress affects each of us differently, and there is no right or wrong way to respond to challenging circumstances.
It is normal to experience things like:
- Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
- Feeling more emotional, irritable, or overwhelmed than usual
- Changes in sleep, energy, or motivation
- Wanting extra time alone or additional support from others
- Feeling distracted or having trouble making decisions.
These reactions are often signs that your mind and body are working to process what you're experiencing. Be patient with yourself. Take breaks when needed. Lean on trusted friends, family members or coworkers. Most importantly, remember that you do not have to navigate difficult times alone. Support is available to all employees through:

Taking care of yourself is not a sign of weakness, it is an investment in your well-being. Give yourself grace, extend kindness to others, and remember it's okay to not feel okay.
