Move More, Sit Less: What the Latest Physical Activity Guidelines Want You to Know
The updated "Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans" reinforce something simple but powerful: movement matters more than perfection.
One of the biggest updates in the newest guidelines is the recommendation to “move more and sit less.” Research
|
continues to show that long periods of sedentary behavior are associated with higher risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, and other chronic health conditions. The good news is that even small amounts of movement throughout the day can make a meaningful difference.
Another important update is that physical activity no longer needs to happen in 10-minute blocks to “count.” A short walk between meetings, taking the stairs, stretching during breaks, or a quick workout after work all contribute to better health. The focus has shifted from perfection to consistency.
The guidelines continue to recommend:
- Adults aim for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity each week
- Muscle strengthening activities at least 2 days per week
- Children and teens get at least 60 minutes of activity daily
Research also shows that physical activity provides both immediate and long-term benefits. Regular movement can help improve sleep, reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, improve energy levels, support brain health and reduce the risk of several chronic diseases.
Perhaps most importantly, the guidelines remind us that physical activity is not only about fitness. It is one of the most powerful tools we have to support overall well-being, resilience, mood and quality of life.
This month, look for small opportunities to move throughout your day. A little movement done consistently can have a bigger impact than you think.
To continue supporting employees in building sustainable movement habits, we are also excited to introduce a new wellness course this fall called "Active Living Every Day" through Human Kinetics. This evidence-based program focuses on helping participants incorporate more physical activity into daily life in realistic and manageable ways. Rather than emphasizing intense workouts or perfection, the course is designed to help individuals build long term habits, overcome barriers to movement, and create a more active lifestyle that supports overall health and well-being.
If you’d like to receive updates about this program and when it will launch, please email Wellness@LasVegasNevada.gov.
