Congratulations to Management Analyst I Charles Dixon for earning his SmartLab Green Belt certification! Charles executes pre-service orientation sessions for AmeriCorps members working with the Youth Development and Social Innovations team. He felt that the preparation process was taking too much time and resulted in too many errors, which can negatively impact the team of new hires who are receiving the orientation. Charles applied lessons from Green Belt training to assess and measure the problem, identified that a lack of documented instructions was the cause, and developed his own orientation preparation checklist. Since implementing it, Charles has successfully reduced preparation time by approximately 30%, decreased errors by about 50%, and started 100% of |
sessions on time. He placed the checklist in a master folder for the program so that it can continue to be utilized through turnover, and he continues improving upon the checklist with each lesson learned. Congratulations Charles!

The Science of Stress: From Awareness to Action
Congratulations to the first cohort to complete the Science of Stress and Building Resilience Series!
This series spans five months, in-person classes once a month with webinars and “homework” assignments in between. Over the past several months, this group
|
committed to understanding stress, not just as something that happens to them, but as something they can influence, shape and respond to with intention. What started as conversations about stressors and overwhelm evolved into something much deeper — pattern recognition, self-awareness and practical skill-building. Participants explored how stress lives in both the body and the brain. They identified their personal triggers, began to recognize their own stress patterns, and gained a clearer understanding of their window of tolerance. Perhaps most importantly, they learned how to shift their cognitive appraisals — reframing stress from something purely negative into something that can be managed, and at times, even leveraged. By the end of the series, participants weren’t just talking about stress differently, they were experiencing it differently.
We saw:
- Increased awareness of individual stress triggers and behavioral patterns;
- Greater ability to pause and assess stress responses in real time;
- Intentional use of resilience tools like mindfulness, movement and recovery strategies;
- More balanced thinking through cognitive appraisal shifts; and
- Each participant walked away with a personalized stress management plan —something sustainable, realistic and tailored to their own lives.
This cohort reminded us of something we emphasize often: stress responses are not random. They are learned, patterned and — most importantly — they can be reshaped. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering why you react the way you do under pressure, or how to feel more in control during high-stress moments, this series was designed for exactly that.
Next Cohort Begins in July The next Science of Stress cohort begins in July. This is a small-group, interactive series designed to help you:
- Understand the science behind your stress response;
- Build a personalized resilience toolkit;
- Learn practical, evidence-based strategies you can apply immediately;
- Develop a long-term stress management plan that actually works.
If you’re ready to move from simply managing stress to truly understanding and mastering it, we invite you to join us. Spots are limited to maintain the quality and connection of the cohort experience. Click the blue button below to request more information.
