New Safety Enhancements To Be Added To Buffalo Drive Near Arbor View High School

Additional Improvements Also Coming To Whispering Sands Drive

New safety enhancements will be made to the roadways near Arbor View High School in northwest Las Vegas, including the addition of overhead pedestrian-activated flashers.

Following the tragic crash that killed Arbor View senior McKenzie Scott in the crosswalk on Buffalo Drive between Grand Teton and Whispering Sands drives, the city of Las Vegas conducted a traffic study. The traffic study found that all of the traffic safety devices on Buffalo, including the crosswalk, signage and school zone flashers, were functioning properly and are appropriate for the traffic and pedestrian patterns on the roadway.

As a result of the traffic study, the city will be adding the overhead pedestrian activated flashers, adding signage and repainting the crosswalk on Buffalo this summer.

“We wish that safety enhancements could prevent tragedies on our roadways, but the difference-maker is that everyone in the community must be responsible and make good decisions while using the streets,” Mayor Shelley Berkley said. “My heart goes out to McKenzie’s family and friends and the entire Arbor View family for this senseless and tragic loss.”

The city of Las Vegas and the Clark County School District (CCSD) work in partnership to provide safe conditions in and around school zones.

In 2024, the city completed the installation of roadway dividers along Whispering Sands at the front of the school. Parents, students and school staff reported U-tuns and other dangerous activities on Whispering Sands while students were arriving or leaving the school.

These improvements on Whispering Sands are scheduled to be upgraded further in 2026. The city and CCSD will be adding a new crosswalk on Whispering Sands between Buffalo and Tenaya Way, as well as installing permanent concrete roadway dividers.

Roadway safety is a priority and the city and CCSD work together with stakeholders throughout the valley on the Vision Zero strategy. This plan strives to increase roadway safety and eliminate fatal crashes in the city. For more information, visit www.lasvegasnevada.gov/visionzero.

The city relies on the public to report when they see something that may be dangerous on our roadways. Roadway safety concerns can be reported at www.lasvegasnevada.gov/report  (includes the See, Click, Fix Application), via an online form or by calling 702.229.6331.
