Two City Employees Recovering
From left: TEFO Skilled Trades Helpder Roger Alvarado and Traffic Systems Technician Trainee Tommy Weiland
Two city employees are recovering at University Medical Center (UMC) after being severely injured while on the job earlier this month. Roger Alvarado and Tommy Weiland are part of our Traffic Engineering Field Office, known as TEFO, in the Public Works Department. They came in contact with an electrified overhead power line while working a job. Roger has been with the city for about two years, and Tommy started this past January.
Coworkers in Public Works have set up a way for all city employees to send well wishes to the two injured men. Director Joey Paskey and her team have set up a station at the Public Works window on the fifth floor of City Hall. Employees can stop by and sign get-well cards for them. There are also other ways to support Roger and Tommy if you would like.
The Public Works team says the expressions of care and concern the pair have already received have really lifted their spirits. If you plan to stop by the Public Works window during work hours, please be sure to notify your supervisor in advance.

The city’s thematic goal this year is focused on the well-being of our employees — physically, emotionally and financially. This week our focus is on emotional resilience.
The ABCs Of Emotional Resilience
|
Emotional resilience is being able to manage your emotions during difficult and stressful situations and recovering quickly from them. Emotional resilience is a trait that everyone should work on as part of their wellness in both personal and professional environments. Emotional resilience is how we manage our emotional responses during a challenge or crisis. More resilient people “bounce back” quicker, even if an unfavorable emotion is experienced. The ABCs of Emotional Resilience are awareness, balance, and connection.
-
Awareness involves recognizing and understanding your emotions and reactions.
-
Balance means maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and finding equilibrium in your life.
-
Connection emphasizes the importance of building and nurturing supportive relationships with others.
Being able to apply these components of resilience and recognize your own ability to regulate and manage your emotions will help you better understand how you handle difficult situations.
How can you work on your emotional resilience and build better resilience during tough times? Five tips for building stronger emotional resilience include:
-
Develop self-awareness. Are you aware of your own emotions and reactions? Do you understand why you feel or react the way you do?
-
Practice mindfulness. Be present and engage in mindfulness activities, such as breathing, to regulate your emotions during heightened emotional situations so that you can better manage the stressors and challenges.
-
Build social support. Surround yourself with supportive relationships and people who you can trust, talk with, and “vent to” in a safe space.
-
Prioritize self-care. Before you can build resilience, you first have to take care of yourself, emotionally and physically. Take care of your emotional and physical well-being so that you can build better emotional resilience.
-
Learn coping skills. Develop effective ways to deal with challenges and setbacks that work for you. Be able to naturally implement these coping skills when needed. Learn new ways to cope with different situations. Avoid unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Learn more about your emotional resilience by attending one of the amazing workshops on emotional intelligence or the science of well-being that the Organizational Development team holds by visiting the Training page here, including the course "The ABCs of Emotional Resilience: A Better Way to Bounce Back" July 11 at 9 a.m. Visit the Training page, go to Oracle, or email orgdevelopment@lasvegasnevada.gov to sign up!
