City Manager and City Attorney Positions

At today’s meeting, the City Council made two important decisions regarding the city manager and city attorney positions. The council selected Executive Director of Infrastructure Mike Janssen as the next city manager. In a separate vote, the council decided to do an external recruitment to find a new city attorney. The job will be open to both internal and external candidates, and will be posted for two weeks.
The approval of Mike Janssen’s employment contract is expected to appear on the June 21 City Council agenda. Mike has been with the since 1997, joining the team as an engineering associate. He has risen through the ranks holding various leadership positions in Public Works including engineering project manager, assistant city traffic engineer, transportation manager and Public Works Director. He was promoted to executive director of infrastructure in Nov. 2020.
Mike received his undergraduate degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Civil Engineering Technology and he has a Master of Public Administration from UNLV. In 2013, the Nevada Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers recognized him as Transportation Engineer of the Year.
At the end of May, both current City Manager Jorge Cervantes and current City Attorney Bryan Scott notified the City Council of their intents to retire. Bryan has said his last day would be Aug. 10, but he did tell the council today he would stay on longer if the recruitment process to replace him isn’t finished. Jorge has said his last day with the city will be Sept. 1. Both Jorge and Bryan have careers that span more than 32 years and have served the city with distinction. Jorge has been with the city about 25 years, Bryan more than 27 years.
