Gearing Up For Civic Plaza Construction
Construction is starting soon for the Civic Plaza project to be located across Clark Avenue from City Hall. Executive Director of Infrastructure/Public Works Mike Janssen explains the construction timeline, shares the site plan and even announces an opening date!
Three parking garages will service the area, including the 500 S. Main St. parking garage, L garage across the railroad tracks in Symphony Park (to be connected by a third-floor vehicle bridge from the City Hall Garage), the City Center parking garage near the Justice Center, and a leased surface lot to be paved at First Street and Garces Avenue. The plan eventually calls for Clark Avenue between Main and First streets to be vacated and no longer be a through street for vehicle traffic.
The goal is to have about 200 city employees moved into building one (along Main Street) by December 2024. CORE Construction is the contractor. Phase 1 calls for clearing the three-acre site, to include removing use of the current parking lot on the site. This is expected to begin in February and will close the surface parking lot completely in early March 2023.
Work has actually been occurring since October 2022 but most people are not aware of it because the early utility relocations by Nevada Energy have all been occurring late at night. Powerline circuit relocations have all been completed and visual daytime construction is expected to start in early March 2023, when the contractor will begin demolition of the old bail bond building, relocate the sewer and water lines in the old alley, and start excavating for the foundations of the new buildings. During market hours and the move in/out by exhibitors, we anticipate heavy vehicle traffic downtown northbound on Grand Central Parkway between Charleston Boulevard and Symphony Park Avenue, as well as moderate to heavy vehicle traffic eastbound on Bonneville Avenue from Martin L. King Jr. Boulevard (MLK) to Grand Central Parkway during the morning hours. During afternoon and evening hours Jan. 29-Feb. 3, heavy traffic is anticipated on Bonneville westbound from Grand Central to MLK, as well as southbound on both Grand Central and MLK from Bonneville to Charleston. Additional congestion is expected westbound on Symphony Park Avenue between Grand Central and MLK. Expect delays if traveling in these areas.
If driving in these areas on market days, we recommend using WAZE to determine the best possible route. During peak times, alternate routes are recommended, where possible, to avoid delays and congestion.
COVID Cases Remain Low
For the week ending Jan. 23, 2023, we have just four new confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in the employee population. This compares to zero new cases last week. This time, four departments had at least one employee test positive over the last seven days. Since the pandemic started, the total number of positive cases reported among the city workforce is now 1,682.
Some encouraging news is that this month continues to trend toward the lowest for reported cases in a January since the city’s HR team began tracking.
In other COVID-related news, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing changes to the vaccination strategy, recommending annual vaccinations similar to the flu shot. Aside from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) websites, information can also be found on www.covid.gov for resources/information.
With COVID not completely gone from the workplace, we want to make sure everyone knows when to get tested and what to do if you test positive. It remains vital that if you are sick or experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, you stay home and consult your health care provider. Should you test positive for the coronavirus, please notify your supervisor right away. If you have any questions, please contact Human Resources.
In addition, updated COVID-19 vaccines boosters are now available at Southern Nevada Health District clinic locations. At this time, if someone is seeking a booster dose, the individual should visit the clinic as a walk-in rather than making an appointment. The CDC still recommends wearing masks and increasing space and distance as needed.
