Two Alarm Fire Damages East Sahara Avenue Business – Jan. 18

Cause Of The Large Blaze Is Under Investigation

Las Vegas, Clark County and North Las Vegas firefighters responded to a large blaze early Tuesday morning at an East Sahara Avenue business. The building belongs to a retail lighting supply company. The business was closed at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no reported injuries.

Fire dispatchers received calls, including some from Parking Enforcement officers in the area, at 3:43 a.m. Tuesday, Jan.18 that a large building at 800 E. Sahara Ave had heavy smoke coming from it.  When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was showing from the one story portion of a large two-story concrete block building. Shortly after firefighters entered the building, which was full of thick smoke, flames broke through the roof. Additional fire equipment and firefighters were dispatched to the blaze.  A total of 25 fire units with 75 fire personnel responded to the fire.

It took several hours to bring the fire under control. Because of a concern that the structural integrity of the building was compromised, mainly the roof might cave-in, firefighters fought the fire from outside.

Fire investigators have not had a chance to enter the building, so the cause of the fire is under investigation and a damage assessment is not available at this time.

The building houses Statewide Lighting Center, which retails lighting supplies. Fifteen people work at the facility. No one was at the business at the time of the fire. The manager says when they closed late Monday afternoon, everything was alright.  He had no idea on how the fire might have started.

East Sahara Avenue was closed to traffic for approximately four hours due to fire hoses crossing the street and the numerous emergency vehicles in the area.

Firefighters are expected to remain on scene for several more hours on Tuesday afternoon.
