Man Starts Downtown Motel On Fire, Charged With Arson – Sept. 10
No Injuries Reported During Incident
Las Vegas firefighters responded to the Desert Hills Motel, 2121 Fremont St. at 11:19 a.m. Thursday – Sept 10 for a reported fire in a room and a person was trapped in the room.
When firefighters arrived at the one story motel, the fire was out. It was put out by residents from other rooms at the motel using water. There was a fire at the front door and window to the small studio unit preventing escape. The occupant in the room called dispatchers back while firefighters were enroute and advised she was in the bathtub. Luckily the occupant was out of the room and safe when crews arrived.
People who were outside and helped put the fire out advised firefighters on arrival that the person who started the fire was in one of the rooms at the motel. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police was requested as well as Arson Investigators from Las Vegas Fire & Rescue. The man was questioned by the investigators and then arrested. The suspect is being charged with arson in the first degree.
Kyle A. Szczesny, 34, resides at the motel also. He was taken to the Clark County Detention Center and charged for allegedly starting the fire. Witnesses told investigators Szczesny threw a bottle with a liquid in it at the door of the motel after lighting something in the bottle. When the bottle hit the door it broke and the liquid caught fire.
The door and a window was damaged by the fire, the unit had smoke damage. Damage was estimated at $2500.00.
The woman who lives in unit told investigators that she did not know Szczeny and had no idea why he would target her.
The suspect is currently in the detention center and scheduled to be in court in the morning.
