Fireworks Damage Las Vegas Home
American Red Cross Assisting Family of Five Displaced by Fire
Improperly disposed fireworks started a house on fire late Friday night in the city. Neighbors alerted the occupants of the house that their home was on fire when they saw smoke coming from the roof. The family of five is displaced and being assisted by the American Red Cross. There were no reported injuries during the incident.
Firefighters responded to 5116 Arbor Drive at 11:49 p.m. Friday, June 19. On arrival smoke was showing from the vents of the attic of a two-story house. It took firefighters less than ten minutes to get the incident under control. The fire was mostly smoldering causing smoke which made it difficult to find the main area of fire. The fire was in a garage wall and the attic area over the garage.
Fire investigators determined the fire stated in a trash container outside against the garage wall. It appears that a large amount of fireworks that were used earlier were put into the trash container, which caught fire and moved up the wall to the attic.
Fire damage was confined to the garage and the attic over the garage. Damage was estimated at $25,000.
Any type of firework is illegal in the city of Las Vegas all year. Safe-N-Sane fireworks are permitted in the city June 28 thru the Fourth of July. At any other time of the year, even Safe-N-Sane fireworks are illegal. It is not uncommon for firefighters to respond to trash container fires during the Fourth of July holiday period. Spent fireworks should be soaked in a bucket of water for at least an hour before being in a trash container. They can remain hot for an extended amount of time and start trash on fire in the container. That is why it is important to soak them before disposal.
